Vegetarian restaurants in Kochi

← Kochi

Kerala is a fish-eating state, but Kochi has a deep vegetarian tradition: the banana-leaf sadya, dosa and idli tiffin, puttu and appam. Most pure-veg restaurants are in Ernakulam, on and around MG Road and Marine Drive; Fort Kochi has one vegan cafe and several kitchens that cook vegetarian well on request. Here is how to choose by meal, where to look and what to say when you order.

How to choose: four kinds of vegetarian meal

Price marks: ₹ cheap, ₹₹ mid-range, ₹₹₹ expensive. Pure-veg (no meat, fish or egg in the kitchen) is noted where it applies.

Sadya, the banana-leaf feast (₹–₹₹)

The vegetarian sadya is twenty-odd dishes served on a banana leaf in a fixed order: rice, sambar, rasam, avial, olan, kalan, thoran, pickles, and payasam to finish. Gokul Oottupura (pure veg, branches on Marine Drive, MG Road and in Edappally) is the most reliable address and also does breakfast and dinner. Arya Bhavan on MG Road (pure veg, ₹) is one of the best-value sadyas in the centre. BTH Sarovaram (pure veg), at Kundannoor in Maradu on the city bypass, serves it too.

Tiffin: dosa, idli and filter coffee (₹–₹₹)

Hotel Saravana Bhavan in Kacheripady (pure veg, ₹) is open morning to night for masala dosa and ghee roast. Sri Krishna Cafe in Mattancherry (pure veg, ₹) is the old-style tiffin room to stop at during a Jew Town walk; regulars order its basundi. Pai Brothers in Kadavanthra makes more than thirty-six kinds of dosa, and the Indian Coffee House in Ernakulam does masala dosa and vegetable cutlet; both kitchens also cook egg or meat. Dhe Puttu in Edappally is the place to try puttu with kadala in every variety.

Fort Kochi: one vegan cafe and kitchens that adapt (₹₹–₹₹₹)

Fort Kochi has few pure-veg places. Loving Earth Yoga Cafe on Napier Street is fully vegan: Buddha bowls, cashew cheese, wood-fired pizza. Elsewhere the kitchens cook fish first but take vegetarians seriously: Fort House Restaurant on the harbour makes its appam with stew in a vegetable version; History at Brunton Boatyard has Jewish-Kochi vegetable dishes and olan on the menu; Malabar Junction has a real vegetarian menu cooked to order, so mention it when you book.

Sweets and snacks to carry (₹–₹₹)

Kunju's JamRolls (since 1931) and Pandhal Cake Shop, known for its spice-matured plum cake, are both in Panampilly Nagar; cakes and sponges can contain egg, so ask if you avoid it. Cocoacraft near the High Court makes bean-to-bar chocolate, brownies and hot chocolate. In the Broadway lanes, shops fry nendran banana chips in coconut oil daily; buy from a busy counter for freshness.

Where to look

Ernakulam is where vegetarian Kochi eats. MG Road, Marine Drive and Kacheripady have Gokul Oottupura, Arya Bhavan and Saravana Bhavan within a short auto ride of each other, and Panampilly Nagar and Kadavanthra add Pai Brothers and the bakeries. Edappally, by the metro station of the same name, has Dhe Puttu and another Gokul branch. Mattancherry has Sri Krishna Cafe for breakfast or lunch on the heritage walk. Fort Kochi is the hardest: one vegan cafe and otherwise mixed kitchens, so for a full vegetarian meal take the ferry across to Ernakulam.

Good to know

Kerala cooks with fish, coconut and egg as a matter of course; a few habits make ordering easier.

  • Look for 'pure veg' — Signs saying 'pure veg' or 'vegetarian' mean no meat, fish or egg in the kitchen. Most other Kochi restaurants cook both.
  • Name egg separately — Egg dosa is a Kochi classic (Pai Brothers is credited with inventing it); say 'no egg' as well as 'no fish' and 'no meat'.
  • Vegans: ask about milk and ghee — Payasam, the sadya dessert, is often cooked with milk, as is palada payasam; tiffin dishes can be finished in ghee.
