What to eat in Govardhan
Chappan bhog
Govardhan's own offering: the hill Krishna lifted is fed 56 dishes at Annakut, and the same idea scales down to any temple thali here.
🧈 Makhan mishri
Butter and sugar crystals, what the child Krishna stole in these very villages. Handed out in pinches, not sold.
🟡 Peda
The Braj sweet: dense reduced milk, pressed into a disc and stamped. Bought by the boxful on the way out of the parikrama.
🍚 Kadhi chawal
What the parikrama actually runs on: sour gram-flour curry over rice, ladled out at the roadside stalls that feed walkers for free.
🥛 Rabri
Milk reduced for hours over low heat until it thickens and the skin is folded back in, layer after layer. Sweet, but mostly it tastes of patience.
🥛 Thandai
Cold milk ground with almonds, fennel and pepper: the Braj answer to the heat, and the drink of Holi in Krishna's own country.
