Indian food

Peda

Also called: Peda, Педа, Mathura peda, Матхурская педа

Dense milk fudge, often stamped with a pattern and handed out as prasadam. Mathura's is the benchmark.

Where to try it

Govardhan

The Braj sweet: dense reduced milk, pressed into a disc and stamped. Bought by the boxful on the way out of the parikrama.

Mathura

The Mathura peda is a named thing: darker, grainier and drier than the Vrindavan version, and the old shops will tell you the difference unprompted.

Vrindavan

Every second shop on the parikrama route sells it, and the good ones make it twice a day.
