Chandigarh itinerary: one, two or three days

← Chandigarh

One day in Chandigarh covers the essentials: the Capitol Complex on a booked tour, the Rock Garden and sunset at Sukhna Lake. A second day adds the Sector 10 museums, the Rose Garden and the markets; a third goes out along the Kalka road to Mata Mansa Devi, Chandi Mandir and the Pinjore Gardens.

How to plan the days

Chandigarh's sights sit in three clusters, and grouping them saves most of the travel. The north-east edge of the grid holds the Capitol Complex in Sector 1, the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake. Sector 10 has the Government Museum and Art Gallery and the City Museum, with the Rose Garden nearby in Sector 16 and the Sector 17 plaza close by. Outside the city, the road towards Kalka strings together Chandi Mandir, Mata Mansa Devi and Pinjore.

Within a sector you can walk; between sectors you need a cab or an auto. Two things decide the order: the Capitol Complex can only be seen on a free escorted tour with photo ID, and most museums close on Mondays.

Day 1: Le Corbusier's city

The essentials for a one-day visit.

  1. Morning: the Capitol Complex

Book the free escorted tour in advance on the Chandigarh Tourism site and bring the photo ID you applied with. Tours start at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00; the buildings can be entered Monday to Friday, while on weekends the tour stays outside. The complex (Assembly, Secretariat, High Court and the Open Hand) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  2. Midday: the Rock Garden

Nek Chand's sculpture garden of more than 2,000 figures made from broken ceramics, bangles, tiles and industrial waste, close to the Capitol.

  3. Late afternoon: Sukhna Lake

Walk the promenade or take a pedal boat, a shikara or the solar cruise; the Garden of Silence is at the far end. Sunset is the time to be here.

  4. Evening: Sector 17

The plaza fills with people in the evening. Eat nearby: see what to eat in Chandigarh.

Day 2: museums, gardens and markets

Avoid Monday for this day: the museums are closed.

  1. Sector 10 museums

The Government Museum and Art Gallery, in a Le Corbusier building, holds Gandhara sculpture and Pahari miniatures; guided tours leave six times a day. The City Museum next to it tells how Chandigarh was planned.

  2. Rose Garden and Leisure Valley

The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16 is part of Leisure Valley, the 8-km strip of parks through the city.

  3. Le Corbusier and Jeanneret

The Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19, in the architect's former office, the Pierre Jeanneret House Museum in Sector 5, and Gandhi Bhawan on the Panjab University campus.

  4. Evening: Sector 22 or 19

Shastri Market in Sector 22 or Sadar Bazaar in Sector 19 for phulkari, juttis and bargaining; the fixed-price Phulkari emporium is in Sector 17. Markets

Day 3: the Kalka road

Out of the city, by cab.

  1. Mata Mansa Devi and Chandi Mandir

Mata Mansa Devi in Panchkula is one of the great Shakti shrines of North India, calm on an ordinary morning; Chandi Mandir, about 15 km out by the Kalka highway, is the shrine the city is named after. Shoes off, entry free at both.

  2. Pinjore Gardens

The 17th-century Mughal garden of seven terraces, about 22 km from the city and a 40–50 minute drive; lit up in the evening. More

  3. Or: Gurudwara Nada Sahib

Instead of the temples, the white-marble Nada Sahib on the Ghaggar, where Guru Gobind Singh halted; langar is served through the day. Cover your head.

With more time

The Kalka–Shimla Railway, a UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line, starts at Kalka, about 30 km away; the climb to Shimla takes four to five and a half hours, so it needs a full day and ideally a night in Shimla. Buses to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala leave from ISBT Sector 43. Nearer options: day trips from Chandigarh.
