Gandhi Bhawan, Panjab University
Pierre Jeanneret designed this study centre for Gandhian thought, detailed and built with the university's own architect B. P. Mathur, and it opened in 1962, and it resembles nothing else he built here: folded planes opening like petals, lifted clear of a shallow reflecting pool so the water throws light back underneath them. It stands on a lawn of the Panjab University campus rather than among the government blocks, which is why most visitors never find it. It was the first building in India to win the Getty Foundation's Keeping It Modern grant: USD 130,000 towards a conservation plan and restoration. Pool and exterior belong to any campus walk; interiors keep university hours.
Perhaps the quietest, most beautiful modernist building here, hidden on a campus lawn
