Why it belongs to Vrindavan

In Krishna tradition Vrindavan is the town in Braj where he grew up, and the best-loved stories of that childhood are about butter: the pranks that earned him the name Makhan Chor, the butter thief. Butter is among the offerings made to Krishna, and offered food comes back to devotees as prasad. In Vrindavan's temples makhan mishri is handed out in this way, given rather than sold. The full story, and the two ingredients, are on the makhan mishri page.

✅ Receiving it at a temple

Taking prasad is simple, and nobody expects a visitor to get it perfect.

  • From the palm, in a pinch — Makhan mishri is taken in a pinch from the palm, not eaten with a spoon, and eaten there and then.
  • Eat it, do not throw it away — Prasad is food first offered to the deity and then shared with those present; it is meant to be eaten.
  • Do not expect it on demand — It is handed out, not ordered, so there is no counter to ask at. Where and when it is given is up to the temple.

Temples and Janmashtami

The India GO guide records that makhan mishri is handed out at Vrindavan's temples, without naming one temple for it. Start with the temples of Vrindavan, from Banke Bihari Mandir to ISKCON Vrindavan and Radha Raman Mandir.

The festival of butter is Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, the largest festival of Braj, when devotees sing until midnight, the hour of his birth. In 2027 it falls on 25 August.

What to buy instead

If you want a Braj sweet to take with you, the one that is sold is peda, the dense milk fudge: in Vrindavan every second shop on the parikrama route sells it. See peda in Vrindavan and what to eat in Vrindavan. Makhan mishri is butter and sugar: vegetarian, not vegan.
