Peda in Vrindavan

Peda, a soft milk fudge, is Vrindavan's signature sweet, and the town sells it everywhere: every second shop on the parikrama route has a tray. Two old addresses stand out, both in the lanes by Banke Bihari temple: Radhe Radhe Pede Wala, which rolls it by hand and sells it by weight, and Royal Bharti Foods, open since 1958. Vrindavan's peda is softer and paler than the darker, drier Mathura kind.

Two old addresses by Banke Bihari

Both are a few steps from Banke Bihari Mandir, and both are vegetarian. Price level ₹₹.

Radhe Radhe Pede Wala, Banke Bihari main lane

A very old peda shop in Chaitanya Vihar that locals and pilgrims have trusted for generations. Milk is slow-simmered until it thickens to a dough, then sweetened, scented with cardamom and rolled by hand, so the pedas come out soft and crumbly. Sold fresh by weight. It is also the place for khurchan malai, sweetened cream in small clay pots.

Royal Bharti Foods, Bankebihari Colony

Began in 1958 as Bharti Mithaiwala near Banke Bihari, and the district administration still lists it among its peda shops. Known for classic peda, khurchan and coil-hot jalebi, and it doubles as a large vegetarian eatery for aloo-puri and thalis between darshans. Sweets are made in volume and sell fast, which keeps them fresh.

Vrindavan peda or Mathura peda?

The two towns are close, and their pedas are not the same. Mathura's is darker, grainier and drier; Vrindavan's, as the old shops here make it, is softer and crumblier, rolled by hand with cardamom. In Mathura the old shops will explain the difference without being asked, and Mathura also sells pakka peda, made to keep. If you are visiting both, buy one box in each and compare: see peda in Mathura.

In Braj peda is less a dessert than an offering: it is one of the sweets offered to Krishna, above all at Janmashtami, and handed out as prasad (food first offered to the deity, then shared). The background is on the peda page.

✅ Buying and carrying it

  • Buy fresh, by weight: the good shops make peda twice a day.
  • How long it keeps: soft peda lasts about three days without a fridge. For a long journey, buy last, or look for pakka peda in Mathura.
  • Diet: milk, sugar and often ghee, no egg: vegetarian, not vegan.
