Sunset points in Pune

← Pune

Inside the city, the two classic sunset points are hills: Parvati Hill, 108 steps up to a Peshwa-era temple with a view over all of Pune, and Vetal Tekdi, the highest ground within city limits. Out of town, Khadakwasla Dam about 15 km southwest is where Pune goes to watch the sun set over water. For sunrise, the same Vetal Tekdi trails, Pashan Lake and Sinhagad Fort are the usual picks.

Sunset in the city

Three spots within the city, all free to enter.

Parvati Hill

A hill rising to about 640 m above sea level, with 108 steps to the Devdeveshwar temple of Shiva and Parvati, completed under Balaji Baji Rao in 1749. The summit gives a panoramic view of the city. Tradition holds that the last Peshwa watched the Battle of Khadki (Kirkee) from here in 1817. Parvati Hill

Vetal Tekdi

The highest ground inside the city, around 800 m above sea level, with red-earth trails from Law College Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Kothrud and Pashan, and the skyline in every direction. Come at sunrise or in the last hour of daylight and carry water: there is none on top. Vetal Tekdi

Saras Baug

Not a viewpoint but the city's classic evening: a garden at the foot of Parvati Hill, laid out on the bed of an 18th-century lake, with the island temple of Talyatla Ganpati (1784) lit up after dark and chaat stalls outside the gate. Open early morning and again from about 4 pm to 11 pm. Combine it with the Parvati climb next door. Saras Baug

Out of town: water and forts

Distances are approximate, from the city.

Khadakwasla Dam (~15 km southwest)

A reservoir on the Sinhagad road with a lakeside promenade of carts selling roast bhutta (corn), bhel and ice cream. People come for the sunset over the water with hills behind; the eastern bank has the best view. No entry fee, no swimming. Weekday evenings are much quieter than weekends. Khadakwasla Dam

Sinhagad Fort (~30 km southwest)

The city's favourite view, out over the Khadakwasla backwaters; on a clear day Rajgad, Purandar and Torna forts are visible too. Walk up from Atkarwadi in 45 to 90 minutes or drive to the summit. Weekends are packed, so go early on a weekday, and finish at Khadakwasla on the way back. Sinhagad Fort

Sunrise spots

Pune is a morning city: Vetal Tekdi and Parvati Hill are both walked at dawn by joggers. Pashan Lake (~12 km northwest) belongs to birdwatchers in the early morning, with migratory ducks and waders from roughly November to February; there are no facilities, so bring binoculars. Bedse Caves (~50 km, near Kamshet) are a morning trip: the 1st-century BCE prayer hall faces the morning light, and photographers time the visit for it. About 400 steps lead up, with no stalls, shade or water at the top.

Which months

October to February is Pune's best window: almost no rain from December to April. In June to September the city averages 8 to 13 rainy days a month, so many evenings are cloudy, though the hills around Pune are at their greenest. More in Pune weather and viewpoints.
