Sinhagad Fort

← Pune

AreaThoptewadi, ~30 km southwest

The hill everyone in Pune climbs at least once. Originally Kondhana, it was renamed the Lion Fort after Shivaji's commander Tanaji Malusare fell recapturing it from the Mughals in 1670; on top are his memorial, the Kondhaneshwar temple and the Dev Take spring, with the view running out over the Khadakwasla backwaters. Reach it on foot from Atkarwadi in 45 to 90 minutes or by road to the summit, roughly Rs 50 a car, then eat pithla-bhakri, gram-flour curry with millet bread, at the stalls, which counts as part of the ritual. Weekends are packed - come early on a weekday, best from late September to February.
