Ooty & Coonoor

The twin Nilgiri hill stations of Ooty and Coonoor run on tea, eucalyptus air and faded English charm, linked by a UNESCO toy train that creaks up through the clouds. Botanical gardens, lakes and viewpoints in the classic sweater-weather escape of the south.

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Isha Yoga Center

At the foot of the Velliangiri hills near Coimbatore, a place engineered for stillness: the consecrated Dhyanalinga and the towering 112-foot Adiyogi, Sadhguru's steel face of yoga. Meditation, yoga programs, and one of the largest sculptures on earth.

Udupi

A small coastal town with an outsized culinary shadow: the Udupi restaurants found all over India take their name and their vegetarian repertoire from here. At its centre is the 13th-century Krishna Matha, where the deity is seen through a silver-plated window and eight monasteries take turns running the temple.

Munnar

High in the Western Ghats, endless corrugated tea gardens roll away into mist, waterfalls and the odd colonial bungalow. The coolest, greenest escape in the south: hill walks, tea estates, and slopes that turn blue with the once-in-twelve-years neelakurinji bloom.

Kochi

Kerala's seafaring crossroads, where Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish traders met: old Fort Kochi with its Chinese fishing nets, the synagogue and Jew Town, spice markets, antiques and evening Kathakali performances. The gateway to Kerala's famous backwaters, too.
