Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangapatna

← Mysore

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangapatna is the temple that gave the island town its name: a Vishnu shrine consecrated around 984 and enlarged by four dynasties. Karnataka Tourism lists it as open every day from 7:00 am to 1:30 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Entry is free, modest dress is expected, and shoes come off at the gate.

AreaInside Srirangapatna fort, 20 km north

The town on the Kaveri island took its name from this temple, not the other way round: consecrated in 984 under the Western Gangas, then enlarged by the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and the Wodeyars in turn, until it grew into one of the largest temple complexes in Karnataka. Inside lies Adi Ranga, the 'first' of the five Pancharanga shrines of the reclining Vishnu strung along the Kaveri. It stands within the island fort, so it fits naturally with the Tipu Sultan sites nearby. Pilgrims take a dip at the river ghats before darshan, the sight of the deity; shoes come off at the gate. Free, and often busy.

Temple timings and entry

According to Karnataka Tourism, the temple is open all days:

  • Morning: 7:00 am to 1:30 pm
  • Evening: 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm

The same Karnataka Tourism page also gives slightly different hours in its FAQ (7:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm), so treat the times as approximate. Entry is free. Karnataka Tourism's own tip is to come on a weekday to avoid the crowds; weekends and festival days are much busier.

History: Adi Ranga on the Kaveri

Srirangapatna is an island in the river Kaveri, and the town took its name from this temple, not the other way round. The temple was consecrated around 984 under the Western Gangas, then enlarged by the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara rulers and the Wodeyars of Mysore in turn, until it became one of the largest temple complexes in Karnataka. It stands inside the island fort, close to the Tipu Sultan sites.

The deity here is Adi Ranga, "the first Ranga": the first, furthest upstream, of the Pancharanga Kshetrams, five shrines of Vishnu as Ranganatha strung along the Kaveri. Downstream come Madhya Ranga at Shivanasamudra and Antya Ranga at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu.

What to see inside

Karnataka Tourism describes a striking tower over the entrance, two large prakarams (enclosing courtyards) around the sanctum, and a pillared pavilion with detailed carving.

Ranganatha

In the sanctum, Vishnu reclines on the coils of the seven-hooded serpent Adishesha, with Lakshmi at his feet.

Smaller shrines

Shrines to Narasimha, Garuda, Gopalakrishna and Hanuman inside the complex.

The river ghats

Pilgrims take a dip in the Kaveri at the ghats before darshan, the viewing of the deity.

✅ Dress code and etiquette

  • Modest dress is expected, according to Karnataka Tourism: for men a shirt and trousers or a dhoti, for women a sari, half-sari or salwar suit.
  • Shoes off at the entrance.
  • It is an active pilgrimage temple and often crowded; keep to the queue.
  • Karnataka Tourism notes that photography rules vary: check before photographing inside the sanctum.

Best time and how to reach

Best time: Karnataka Tourism recommends October to March for Srirangapatna. For the temple it also suggests the big festivals (Bangarada Garudotsava, Sriranga Jayanti, Sudha Poornima, Uyyalotsava) or the monsoon months of July and September, when the Kaveri runs full.

Getting there: Srirangapatna is about 15 km from Mysuru and about 125 km from Bengaluru, in Mandya district. Karnataka Tourism suggests a full day for the town with the fort and the Tipu Sultan sites.
