Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's island capital

← Mysore

Srirangapatna is a town on an island in the Kaveri river, 15 km from Mysore, and the former capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. In half a day you can see a Vishnu temple that gave the town its name, Tipu's painted summer palace, the domed tomb where he lies, and the place where he fell in 1799. Go in the morning, by car, bike or the local train, and add the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary 3 to 4 km away.

Fifteen kilometers from Mysore, on an island in the Kaveri River, lies Srirangapatna, the former capital of the Mysore state under Tipu Sultan, the "Tiger of Mysore." He remains one of South India's most argued-about figures: to some a fierce resister of British conquest and a reformer, to others a ruthless ruler. Coming here is the best way to form your own view.

What to see on the island:

- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple: an ancient and revered Vishnu temple that gave the town its name; its oldest parts go back over a thousand years. - Daria Daulat Bagh: Tipu's summer palace of teak, covered floor-to-ceiling in murals of his battles against the British (a small ASI ticket, around 300 rupees for foreigners). - Gumbaz: the serene domed mausoleum of Tipu and his father Hyder Ali. - Fragments of the fort walls and the spot where Tipu fell in the siege of 1799.

Add the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary 4 km away: short boat rides past islands crowded with storks, ibises, and basking crocodiles. Together it's a perfect half-day trip by car or bike, best in the morning.

Tipu Sultan's island capital

Why Srirangapatna matters

The whole town is a river island: the Kaveri splits around it and closes again downstream. For the second half of the 18th century this was the capital of the Mysore state under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the “Tiger of Mysore”. In 1799 it saw the last and decisive battle of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, and Tipu died defending it.

Tipu remains one of the most argued-about figures in South India: to some a fierce opponent of British conquest and a reformer, to others a ruthless ruler. Srirangapatna doesn't settle the argument. It lets you walk through the evidence: his palace, his mosque, his prison for British officers, his tomb, all on one small island.

What to see in Srirangapatna

The main sights in roughly the order most people visit them.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

The Vishnu temple that gave the town its name. It was founded by the Western Ganga kings in the 9th century and enlarged later in Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles. A working temple: leave shoes outside and dress modestly, as in any Hindu temple.

Daria Daulat Bagh

Tipu's summer palace of teak, built in 1784 and painted floor to ceiling with murals of his battles against the British. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), with a small ticket and a higher rate for foreign citizens (around ₹250 to ₹300 in guides). Check the current price on the ASI ticketing site.

Gumbaz

A calm domed mausoleum in a garden, where Tipu Sultan lies beside his father Hyder Ali and his mother Fatima Begum.

Jama Masjid

Tipu's mosque, built in 1782 according to its Persian inscription.

Fort walls, Colonel Bailey's Dungeon and the place where Tipu fell

Fragments of the fortifications, the prison where Tipu held captured British officers, and the spot marking where he died in the siege of 1799.

Wellesley Bridge

A bridge over the Kaveri built in 1804, five years after the siege.

👣 How to reach Srirangapatna from Mysore

The town is close enough to Mysore for a half-day trip, though it lies in the neighbouring Mandya district.

  1. By car, taxi or bike

About 15 km from Mysore. The sights are spread across the island, so having your own wheels for the day saves a lot of walking in the heat.

  2. By train

Shrirangapattana station is on the Mysore–Bangalore line, about 15 km from Mysore Junction. Useful if you are travelling between the two cities and want to stop on the way.

  3. Add Ranganathittu

The bird sanctuary is about 3 to 4 km away: short boat rides past islands crowded with storks and ibises, with crocodiles basking on the rocks.

Timings and when to go

Srirangapatna is a town, not a single attraction, so it has no opening hours of its own. Each monument keeps its own: the temple follows its ritual schedule, and the ASI monuments have their own daytime hours. Check them on the day, especially for Daria Daulat Bagh.

Go in the morning. It is cooler, and the boat ride at Ranganathittu is more pleasant before the heat. By early afternoon you can be back in Mysore.
