Festivals of Mumbai
Mumbai's great festival is Ganesh Chaturthi: ten days when whole neighbourhoods build a pandal around an idol, and an eleventh when the city walks its idols into the sea. The rest of the year mixes faiths and seasons, from Dahi Handi's human pyramids in August to the free Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in the dry winter. Most dates move with the lunar calendar; the ones below update automatically.
Diwali
Mumbai's Diwali is lanterns and dawn music: paper akash kandils in windows, Diwali Pahat recitals at sunrise and a light display around Shivaji Park that runs for about ten days.

Christmas
Mumbai's midnight mass is mostly not at midnight: Maharashtra's night-time loudspeaker ban pushes carols to around 9:30 pm and mass to around 10 pm at many parishes, and the Mount Mary fair people associate with Bandra is a September event with no connection to Christmas.

📅 30 September 2027
Ganesh Chaturthi: the city's festival
Dates: 4–14 September 2027. For ten days Ganesha is a guest in homes and in street pavilions (pandals), and each evening brings drums and queues. The most visited mandal is Lalbaugcha Raja in Lalbaug, with two free queues: Mukh Darshan, a view of the idol from the aisle, and the far longer Charan Sparsh line to the idol's feet. The GSB Seva Mandal at King's Circle, Matunga, is known for its gold-ornamented idol and an orderly queue.
The festival ends on Anant Chaturdashi with visarjan: the largest idols go into the sea at Girgaum Chowpatty, and Juhu, Dadar and Versova beaches are immersion points too. The whole route is free; Marine Drive's seawall gives the long view without joining the beach crowd. Rooms fill: book about a month and a half ahead. More on the Ganesh Chaturthi page.

Planning around festivals

For Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri, book rooms about a month and a half ahead and long-distance trains about two months ahead. Big crowds gather at Lalbaug, at the immersion beaches and at the Dahi Handi pyramids: keep valuables in front and agree a meeting point. Safety basics are in is India safe.
