Eid al-Fitr in India: Ramadan nights, Chaand Raat and Eid morning
Eid Mubarak: sweetness after a month of fasting
Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, ends the month of Ramadan: a communal prayer in the morning, embraces, new clothes, sheer khurma and visits that last all day. In 2027 it is expected on Wednesday 10 March, a central government holiday, though the date is fixed only when the Shawwal crescent is sighted the evening before and may move to 11 March. For a traveller the real event is the month leading up to it, the night food streets of Ramadan and Chaand Raat, the market night before Eid, so plan around those nights rather than Eid morning alone.
The Festival of Breaking the Fast: joy, charity and feasting at the end of Ramadan
The day after the Ramadan fast ends, when the Shawwal crescent is sighted. The central government lists a tentative date and may move it by a day.
The legend
In Islamic tradition, the Quran began to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the month of Ramadan.
So through Ramadan Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and break the fast in the evening, traditionally with dates and water.
The month lasts 29 or 30 days, and a thin new crescent announces its end.
Next morning comes Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast: communal prayer, embraces and sweets after a month of fasting.

True or myth
❌ Myth. If the new crescent is not seen after the 29th day of Ramadan, the festival moves to the next day.
✅ True. Zakat al-Fitr is paid before the Eid prayer, so that everyone can celebrate.
❌ Myth. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the festival moves about eleven days earlier every year.
Where to celebrate
Hyderabad ⭐
Hyderabad's Ramadan is a haleem season with a registered geographical indication behind it, and the city's largest Eid congregation is at the Mir Alam Eidgah, not at the Mecca Masjid.
Delhi ⭐
The month before Eid is the event: the lanes off Jama Masjid's Gate 1 run from the breaking of the fast at sunset until roughly three or four in the morning for all thirty nights, and then Eid day itself moves indoors…
Mumbai
For one month a year the stretch of Mohammed Ali Road under the Minara Masjid becomes a night food street that runs from the breaking of the fast until the early hours, and its highest night is Chaand Raat, not Eid.
What you see: a month of nights, then one morning
Through Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. At sunset the fast is broken, traditionally with dates and water, and in the old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai that moment opens a night market: mosque courtyards lay out long dastarkhwans (cloths for communal meals), and the lanes outside fill with smoke from kebab grills, stacked sweets and people who will be out until three or four in the morning. It runs every night of the month. The last ten nights are the fullest, with the mosques at their busiest.
When the new crescent is spotted on the 29th or 30th evening, Chaand Raat, "the moon night", begins: the bazaars stay open all night for bangles, clothes and henna, and this, not Eid day, is the busiest night of the year in these streets.
Eid morning is quieter and earlier. People in new clothes walk to the mosques and Eidgahs (open prayer grounds) for the festival prayer, giving zakat al-fitr, alms for the poor, before it so that everyone can celebrate. Afterwards they embrace three times, say "Eid Mubarak", and by mid-morning the festival has moved indoors, to family breakfasts of sheer khurma and visits. Children collect eidi, festival money from their elders. Many Muslim-owned shops and eateries close for the morning.
Where to spend Ramadan's last nights and Eid
Three cities, three night streets. All of it is free to walk.
Hyderabad
A haleem season. The slow-cooked meat and wheat dish carries its own geographical indication here, and the queues at Pista House near Charminar and Shah Ghouse in Tolichowki run all month. At night Laad Bazaar, the one-kilometre strip beside Charminar, sells lacquer bangles, pearls and attar; the fast is broken on the lawns of the Mecca Masjid. The largest Eid prayer is at the Mir Alam Eidgah in Bahadurpura, around two lakh people, with special city buses from across Hyderabad.
Delhi
Every evening of Ramadan the Jama Masjid courtyard lays out dastarkhwans at sunset, and Matia Mahal Road and Bazar Chitli Qabar, opposite Gate No. 1, stay busy until three or four in the morning. The Hazrat Nizamuddin dargah serves a nightly iftar langar (free communal meal), and Zakir Nagar near Jamia is the third food street. On Eid morning Jama Masjid holds one of Delhi's main congregations. Stay in Old Delhi to walk home late, or on the Yellow or Violet metro line. Mumbai
For one month the stretch of Mohammed Ali Road beneath the lit Minara Masjid becomes a night food street, from the breaking of the fast into the early hours. Bohri Mohalla in Bhendi Bazaar is the quieter khau gully (food lane). The peak is Chaand Raat, when the clothing and jewellery shops of Bhendi Bazaar stay open all night. Masjid station on the Central and Harbour lines is the rail approach; suburban trains stop for a few hours after midnight, so late nights end in a taxi.
Kerala
Here Eid al-Fitr is Cheriya Perunnal, "the small festival"; Bakrid is the big one.
✅ Etiquette during Ramadan and Eid
Visitors are welcome in the food streets and around the mosques. Remember that the people serving you have been fasting since dawn.
- Dress modestly — Covered shoulders and legs near mosques and in the old quarters; women should carry a scarf for mosque courtyards and dargahs. Shoes off inside.
- Ask before photos — The lanes are photogenic, the people in them are not props. Ask first, and keep the camera down during prayers.
- At the prayer — If you are not praying, watch from the edges or the steps, never between or in front of the rows.
- Crowds and late nights — Chaand Raat crowds in Laad Bazaar, Matia Mahal and Mohammed Ali Road are shoulder to shoulder. Keep valuables in a front pocket and plan the ride home: Delhi's metro and Mumbai's locals do not run through the night.
- Eid Mubarak — Say it: the greeting is warmly received from anyone.
👣 Planning and booking
The Eid date moves, the Ramadan nights do not. Build the trip on the nights.
- Arrive about twelve days before Eid
Around the twentieth day of Ramadan, so the stay covers the last ten nights, Chaand Raat and Eid morning, and survives the date moving by a day.
- Rooms
Delhi and Hyderabad: about 45 days ahead. Mumbai: about a month. There is no citywide hotel rush; the crowd is on a few streets for a few hours a night.
- Trains on day one
Eid is a gazetted holiday and families travel. Book when the 60-day railway window opens.
