Eid al-Fitr in Hyderabad: the end of Ramadan in the Old City

Eid Mubarak: sweetness after a month of fasting

Eid al-Fitr ends the month-long Ramadan fast, and Hyderabad marks it on a large scale: a month of haleem and night markets around Charminar, the crowded eve of Chaand Raat, then the morning prayer, with the largest congregation at the Mir Alam Eidgah. Next date: 10 March 2027. The day is fixed only when the Shawwal crescent is sighted the evening before, so plan around the last days of Ramadan rather than a single date.

Haleem season

Hyderabadi haleem received Geographical Indication status in 2010, the first meat product in India to do so. The registered proprietor is the Hyderabad Haleem Makers' Association, not any single restaurant. The registration lapsed in December 2019 and was renewed in May 2022 for ten years, to December 2029. In October 2022 it won the 'Most Popular GI' award in a public vote run by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

Haleem season

The season in figures. Around 6,000 eateries across the city sold haleem, and roughly 70% of those were temporary setups that close once Ramadan ends. Around 25,000 people were employed in making and selling it in the 2014 season, with a reported turnover of about five billion rupees. It is cooked over a low firewood flame for up to twelve hours in a bhatti, a cauldron set in a brick-and-mud kiln, stirred continuously with wooden paddles.

The Old City trades round the clock in the final days before Eid. The Madina-Charminar road carries jams through the night; Patthargatti, Patel Market, Gulzar Houz and Laad Bazaar fill with thousands of buyers, including people travelling in from neighbouring districts and from Maharashtra and Karnataka. Stock is readymade garments, textiles, footwear, jewellery, pearls, bangles, attar, crockery, sevaiyan and dry fruit.

Hyderabad

Eid al-Fitr

The main Eid-ul-Fitr congregation in Hyderabad is at the Eidgah Mir Alam at Bahadurpura, not at Mecca Masjid. Around two lakh people attend Mir Alam annually, which local reporting calls the biggest congregation in the city. For Eid-ul-Fitr on 31 March 2025 the published prayer time at Eidgah Mir Alam was 10 am, and Mecca Masjid was also 10 am. Prayers at Mir Alam have been led by Maulana Rizwan Qureshi, Khateeb of Mecca Masjid. Mecca Masjid remains a major congregation in its own right; the distinction is scale and the civic apparatus around it.

Special buses are run to Mir Alam Eidgah from across the city, five drinking-water camps are set up, water for ablution is arranged, roads are re-carpeted, and the Wakf Board provides tents and furnishing. A traffic advisory with parking details is issued. Senior police and minority welfare officials meet worshippers after the prayer to extend greetings.

Eid al-Fitr

After the prayer the day is family and private. Eid is a gazetted public holiday; the temporary haleem stalls that ran all month have finished, and the visiting, the sheer khurma and the sevaiyan happen inside homes rather than in the street.

What Eid al-Fitr marks

Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, falls on the 1st of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, the day after the dawn-to-dusk fast of Ramadan ends. It begins at sunset on the evening the new crescent is sighted; if the moon is not seen after the 29th day of Ramadan, Eid moves to the following day. In Telangana the sighting is announced by the Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee of Hyderabad.

Before the Eid prayer, Muslims pay zakat al-fitr, an obligatory charity for the poor. The prayer itself is said in congregation, often on an open ground, with no call to prayer, and the sermon follows it. Fasting on Eid day is forbidden; the day is for family visits, new clothes and sweets, and children receive eidi, a gift of money from their elders. More on the festival across India: Eid al-Fitr.

The last days of Ramadan in Hyderabad

The detailed programme, venues and prayer arrangements are listed above; this is the order in which they come.

  1. Every evening of Ramadan

The fast is broken at sunset, including on the lawns of the Mecca Masjid, and the haleem counters and night bazaar around Charminar run late.

  2. The final days

The Old City trades late into the night; the lanes from Madina Junction to Laad Bazaar stay jammed into the small hours.

  3. Chaand Raat

The night the crescent is announced is the peak: bangles, attar, new clothes, mehndi on hands, and sevaiyan bought for the morning.

  4. Eid morning

Prayers at mosques and Eidgahs across the city, the largest at Mir Alam, with special buses laid on. After that the day moves indoors: visits, sheer khurma and family meals.

Visiting respectfully

  • Greet with "Eid Mubarak" — It means "blessed Eid" and is warmly received. Ask before photographing people, especially at prayers and iftar.
  • Dress modestly — Near mosques and Eidgahs, and in the Old City through Ramadan.
  • Eid morning closures — Many Muslim-owned shops and eateries close on the morning of Eid for the prayers, then reopen.
  • Sleep outside the Old City — It has few hotels and the lanes are jammed late; staying nearby and coming in each night is easier.
  • Crowds and festivals — The UK government advises particular care during periods of religious significance such as Eid, and notes that the sale of alcohol is often banned during major festivals.
