Christmas in India: where to spend it and what to expect

Paper stars on the verandas and a midnight mass that starts before midnight

Christmas in India is 25 December, a national public holiday, kept by around 28 million Christians and joined by plenty of their neighbours. In 2026 it falls on a Friday. For a traveller it means midnight masses that often start before midnight, paper stars over the verandas, nativity cribs and plum cake, and a choice of very different Christmases: Portuguese Goa, Fort Kochi in carnival season, Park Street in Kolkata, the French Quarter of Puducherry. It also opens the most expensive week of the year to travel, so book early.

India's Christian Christmas: midnight Mass, Kerala stars, and Goan magic

Fixed date.

The legend

⭐

In the Gospel, Jesus is born to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem and laid in a manger, because there is no room at the inn.

🎁

A star leads wise men from the East to the child, bearing gold, frankincense and myrrh.

⛵

By the tradition of India's Christians, the Apostle Thomas lands on the Malabar coast, at Muziris, in AD 52.

🌟

So in December stars light up over Christian homes across India: signs of that same star of Bethlehem.

🕯️

And on the night before 25 December, churches from Goa to Nagaland gather for midnight Mass.

Meaning

Goa

Goan Catholics prepare kuswar for Christmas, a set of festive sweets that can run to twenty-two recipes.

Kerala

The Saint Thomas Christians are among the oldest Christian communities in the world: by their tradition the faith here is nearly two thousand years old.

Northeast

In Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya Christianity is the main faith, and Christmas belongs to the whole community, with choirs and shared feasts.

Customs

🌟 Stars

A lit star, the sign of Bethlehem, hangs over the door, and Christian neighbourhoods glow all December.

🐑 Crib

Homes and churches build nativity cribs with the child in the manger, with a Christmas tree beside them.

🕯️ Midnight Mass

The central service is on the night before the 25th. In Old Goa the great churches fill that night with people from all over India.

🍰 Sweets for neighbours

Sweets and bakes go round to the neighbours, and more and more people of other faiths join in the celebration.

What people eat

🍫 Dodol

coconut milk, palm jaggery and rice flour

🟡 Doce

a Goan sweet of chickpeas and coconut

🥥 Appam and stew

lacy rice pancakes with vegetables in coconut milk

Words of the festival

बड़ा दिन

the Goan Catholic set of Christmas sweets

✅ True. Tradition says the Apostle Thomas landed in Kerala in AD 52, and Saint Thomas Christians have lived there since the early centuries.

In India, Christmas is an ordinary working day.

❌ Myth. It is a public holiday, even though Christians are only around two per cent of the country.

St Francis Xavier's remains lie in Goa.

✅ True. They rest in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, one of the churches on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Mumbai's midnight mass is mostly not at midnight: Maharashtra's night-time loudspeaker ban pushes carols to around 9:30 pm and mass to around 10 pm at many parishes, and the Mount Mary fair people associate with Bandra…

What you see

In Christian neighbourhoods December glows: a lit star hangs over the door of almost every house, cribs with the child in the manger go up in churches and front yards, and bakeries work through plum cake and, in Goa, the kuswar sweets. Malls and markets in the big cities are decorated from November.

The central service is the night of 24 December, and it rarely waits for midnight. In Goa most parishes hold the vigil and mass on open ground in front of the church, and outdoor amplified sound is allowed only until 10 pm unless the district grants a festive relaxation, so many masses start well before twelve. Maharashtra's night-time loudspeaker rule does the same in Mumbai, where carols often begin around 9:30 pm and mass around 10 pm. Some parishes, like Grace Church in Margao, keep the later pattern with prayers at 11:30 pm and mass at midnight. Check your church's time on the day.

Masses are open to everyone, whatever your faith, and visitors are welcome. Christmas Day itself is for family lunches and visiting; the night before is the moment to be out.

Where to spend Christmas in India

Five places with five different characters. Church services and street lights are free everywhere; rooms are not.

Goa

The classic. The Archbishop celebrates the Christmas Eve mass at the Se Cathedral in Old Goa, about 10 km from Panaji, beside the Basilica of Bom Jesus with the relics of St Francis Xavier; in Panjim the crowd gathers at the Immaculate Conception Church above the Church Square, and Ribandar has a crib with life-sized statues. The week after Christmas is the busiest of the Goan year. For the churches stay in Panjim or around Margao rather than on the Calangute–Baga party coast. Kochi

Christmas inside a carnival. Fort Kochi runs one public season from the Cochin Carnival's opening in mid-December to the burning of the Pappanji effigy at midnight on 31 December, with the midnight mass at Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in between. St Francis Church, first built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India. Stay in Fort Kochi itself: on the Pappanji night the ferries and bridge roads from Ernakulam jam. In Kerala's Christian towns, Thrissur and Kottayam among them, the star lanterns are at their best.

Kolkata

Park Street under strung lights made by craftsmen from Chandannagar, choirs and bands on the Allen Park stage on programme evenings, bakeries turning out cake, and the street closed to traffic in the evenings of the 24th and 25th. Midnight mass at St Paul's Cathedral or at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, and Bow Barracks, the Anglo-Indian neighbourhood near Bowbazar, decorated from 23 December (people's homes, so walk it as a guest).

Mumbai

Two clusters about an hour apart: Bandra (Mount Mary Basilica, St Andrew's with its mass on the school grounds, the decorated lanes of Ranwar and Chapel Road) and Colaba–Fort (Holy Name Cathedral, which holds about 3,000, St Thomas Cathedral, the Afghan Church). Pick one for Christmas Eve and stay in it. Christmas does not push Mumbai's hotel prices up the way New Year pushes Goa's.

Puducherry

A cathedral night in the French Quarter: the Archbishop leads midnight mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Mission Street, the choir of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart sings in Tamil, French, English and Latin, and Notre-Dame des Anges prays in three languages by the sea. Everything is within about two kilometres on foot. A week later the seafront becomes a barricaded New Year crowd counted in lakhs, a separate and much bigger event.

✅ Midnight mass etiquette

You do not need to be Christian to attend, and nobody will ask. A few habits make it easy.

  • Come early — Large churches fill well before the start, and outdoor masses need a spot on the ground. Arrive at least half an hour ahead.
  • Dress for church — Covered shoulders and knees. Locals dress up for this night.
  • Communion — In a Catholic mass, if you are not Catholic, stay in your seat during communion or go up with arms crossed for a blessing.
  • Phones down — No flash and no filming during the service itself; take photos of the crib and the lights afterwards.
  • Roads on the night — Calangute–Baga, Colva, Park Street and Fort Kochi all run traffic plans in the last week of December. Plan to walk the last stretch, and do not drink and drive.

👣 Booking ahead

Christmas opens the Christmas to New Year week, the peak of the Indian travel year in the coastal states.

  1. Goa: four months

Book rooms and flights about four months ahead. December 2024 arrivals were 54% above the year before, with a record 200 flights a day in the last week of the month, and late-December tariffs run far above the rest of the season.

  2. Kochi and Puducherry: two and a half months

Both small, both busy from Christmas through New Year. Train tickets go on sale 60 days ahead; book flights as early as the room.

  3. Kolkata and Mumbai: a month

Rooms a month ahead are enough. In Kolkata, reserve Christmas Eve dinner on Park Street early: those tables go first.

  4. Arrive by 22–23 December

One settling day before Christmas Eve. In Goa, a 22 December arrival lands before the coastal traffic plans start.
