Christmas in Kolkata: Park Street, the cathedrals and Bow Barracks

Paper stars on the verandas and a midnight mass that starts before midnight

Kolkata's Christmas has an address: Park Street. In the last week of December the street is strung with lights made by craftsmen from Chandannagar, bands and choirs take the stage at Allen Park, and on the evenings of the 24th and 25th the street closes to cars and fills with people on foot. Around it stand the city's two cathedrals and Bow Barracks, the Anglo-Indian lanes that decorate for the season.

The Kolkata Christmas Festival on Park Street

Since 2011 the West Bengal tourism department has run the Kolkata Christmas Festival on Park Street, and the state calls it one of the largest dedicated Christmas carnivals in India. The themed lights run from St Xavier's College to Jawaharlal Nehru Road (Chowringhee) and in recent years have reached further, to the Mullick Bazar crossing and up Cathedral Road to St Paul's. A large Christmas tree stands near Mother Teresa's statue at the Park Street and Camac Street crossing; Park Street's official name is Mother Teresa Sarani.

Allen Park is the centre of the programme: bands and choirs play its stage on festival evenings, and on one day a Christmas parade of about 500 schoolchildren takes the street. On the busiest nights the park itself has sometimes been closed, so check the year's programme before planning around a concert.

The food is part of the tradition. Flurys has served Park Street since 1927, and in New Market the century-old Nahoum's bakery is an institution of its own. More on the street itself: Park Street.

Four places for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

All free. The two cathedrals hold the night services; Park Street and Bow Barracks are for walking.

The Catholic cathedral, where the Archbishop of Calcutta celebrates the midnight mass. Burrabazar is the great wholesale market quarter east of Howrah Bridge: come by taxi or metro well before the start.

Park Street on the 23rd

The lights go up in the third week of December. The 23rd is the easiest evening to walk under them, before the Christmas Eve crowd.

Bow Barracks, near Bowbazar

A lane of red-brick blocks said to have been built as army quarters in the First World War, now home to about 130 families, most of them Anglo-Indian. It decorates from 23 December to New Year and is known for its Christmas. These are people's homes: walk through as a guest and ask before photographing anyone.

Practical notes for Christmas week
