New Market (Hogg Market)

Red brick, Victorian arcades and a clock tower that has been keeping time over Kolkata's shopping since 1874. Around two thousand stalls run under the roof and through the lanes beside it, selling textiles, jewellery, luggage, cheese and confectionery. The century-old Nahoum's bakery is an institution in its own right. Almost nothing carries a fixed price, so bargaining is part of the transaction and there is no reason to hurry it. Roughly 10:00 to 20:00; Esplanade is the nearest metro.
