Christmas in Goa
Paper stars on the verandas and a midnight mass that starts before midnight
Goa's midnight mass mostly starts before midnight, on open ground in front of the church, because amplified sound outdoors is allowed only to 10 pm unless a district officer has granted the festive relaxation; the week that follows is the single busiest tourist week of the Goan year.
Where to watch
Se Cathedral (Se Catedral de Santa Catarina), Old Goa: the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the seat of the Patriarch of the East Indies; the Christmas Eve mass here is the one the Archbishop celebrates. Free entry, no ticket; protected by the ASI and part of the UNESCO Churches and Convents of Goa. About 10 km from Panaji.
Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa: holds the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier and hosts the Exposition of the Sacred Relics once every ten years. Free entry, no ticket. Masses are mostly in Konkani; the Sunday English mass is at 10:15 am.
Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim: the parish church above the Church Square that draws the city crowd, as distinct from the Old Goa monuments. A working parish, free entry; masses in Konkani, English and Portuguese.
Grace Church (Nossa Senhora da Graça), Margao: a Salcete parish on the later pattern, with prayers at 11:30 pm and mass at midnight. A working parish, free entry.

23 December, cribs and the run-up
Crib visiting. Households, chapels and parishes build cribs in the days before Christmas; the chapel at Ribandar is reported to have kept a grand crib tradition for about 35 years, using life-sized statues. Kuswar, the plate of Goan Christmas sweets, is made and exchanged in this window.

24 December, Christmas Eve
Carol singing and the vigil service on the open ground in front of the church. Most Goan parishes hold the midnight service outdoors rather than inside, which is why the sound rules govern the start time. Services begin well before midnight so that the placing of the image of the child Jesus in the crib falls at the stroke of midnight.
