Christmas in Mumbai: Bandra or Colaba, and a 'midnight' mass at ten
Paper stars on the verandas and a midnight mass that starts before midnight
Christmas in Mumbai belongs to its old Christian neighbourhoods: Bandra in the north, Colaba and Fort in the south. Two things shape the evening. The 'midnight' mass usually starts around 10 pm, because outdoor loudspeakers have to fall silent at night. And the two church clusters are about an hour apart through the city, so choose one for Christmas Eve and stay in it.
Mumbai's midnight mass is mostly not at midnight: Maharashtra's night-time loudspeaker ban pushes carols to around 9:30 pm and mass to around 10 pm at many parishes, and the Mount Mary fair people associate with Bandra is a September event with no connection to Christmas.

Programme
24 December, Christmas Eve
The Mumbai pattern. Because of the night-time loudspeaker restriction, many parishes, including St Peter's and Mount Mary in Bandra, start with carols at about 9:30 pm and the mass at about 10 pm, and most midnight masses end before midnight.

What Christmas looks like in Mumbai
In the run-up to Christmas, buildings are lit and houses decorated, and the churches dress up for the night: Mount Mary and St Peter's in Bandra, St Michael's in Mahim, the Wodehouse Church in Colaba and many others. The most decorated streets are in Bandra West, in the old village of Ranwar and along Hill Road and Chapel Road.
The timing surprises visitors. Maharashtra keeps a night-time limit on loudspeakers, lifted to midnight only on a few nights a year, so at many parishes carols begin around 9:30 pm and the Christmas Eve mass around 10 pm. Some parishes hold the service in the open: at St Andrew's in Bandra the Christmas mass is celebrated on the school grounds. Each parish posts its own times; Mount Mary publishes its Christmas Eve mass and carol night on its website.
One thing to separate: the Mount Mary fair that people associate with Bandra is the Bandra Fair, the week after the feast of Mary's birth on 8 September, not a Christmas event. For Christmas across the country see Christmas in India; more on the churches: churches of Mumbai.
Two clusters: pick one for Christmas Eve
Nothing is ticketed; the big parishes simply fill early. Crossing the city on the night takes about an hour, long enough to miss a service.
Bandra, for the hill basilica and the lanes
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount on its hill holds a Christmas Eve mass, a carol night and day masses on 25 December. Below it, St Andrew's holds its mass outdoors, and Ranwar, Hill Road and Chapel Road are the decorated lanes to walk before or after. Bandra West puts all of this on foot. Bandra.
Colaba and Fort, for the cathedrals
Holy Name Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Bombay, holds about 3,000 people and has the cathedral choir and the full ceremonial mass on Christmas Eve. St Thomas Cathedral near Horniman Circle, the city's first Anglican church, was consecrated on Christmas Day 1718; today it belongs to the Church of North India and holds carols and an evening Christmas Eve service.
The Afghan Church, if you plan ahead
The Gothic memorial church of St John the Evangelist at the southern tip of Colaba, built 1847–58, stands inside a naval residential area. There is no entry fee, but carry photo ID and check the day's access before going.
Practical notes
Christmas does not push the whole city's demand up the way New Year does in Goa, so planning is light.
- Book — Rooms about a month ahead, trains and flights about six weeks ahead. Arrive by 23 December to settle in before Christmas Eve.
- Stay in your cluster — Bandra West for Mount Mary and the lanes; Colaba or Fort for Holy Name, St Thomas and the Afghan Church. Areas compared: where to stay in Mumbai.
- Weather — December is dry and warm: about 33°C by day and 18°C at night, with almost no rain. Evenings outdoors are comfortable in light clothes.
- At mass — Everyone is welcome, whatever their faith. Dress modestly, come at least half an hour early, keep the camera for the crib and the lights afterwards, and if you are not Catholic stay in your seat during communion.
- Getting around — Suburban trains link Bandra and the south, but on the night itself the simplest plan is to be within walking distance of your church. Getting around Mumbai.
