Rath Yatra in Mumbai: ISKCON Juhu’s chariots from Andheri
When God comes out to meet the people
Mumbai’s big Rath Yatra is ISKCON Juhu’s: the chariots of Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra are pulled through Andheri West to the temple at Juhu, with free prasadam on the way. The temple sets its own day, usually a Saturday a few days to about a week after Puri’s Rath Yatra (5 July 2027), so check its announcement each year. Watching and walking with the chariots costs nothing.
ISKCON Juhu pulls the chariots the length of the Andheri to Juhu corridor on a chosen Saturday, with published times and a published route.
Where to watch
ISKCON Juhu (Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari Temple), Hare Krishna Land, Juhu: the organising temple and the end point of the procession; a five-day festival runs around the Rath Yatra, with personal arati for the deities. No entry fee.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, Shastri Nagar, Andheri (West): the assembly point where the chariots are loaded and the procession is inaugurated. Open street event.

How the day runs
The day starts late in the morning at the Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School in Shastri Nagar, Andheri West, where the chariots are loaded. The procession is inaugurated there with a rajbhog arati (the midday offering) and speeches, and in the early afternoon the chariots start to move. The published route runs along New Link Road, through the Lokhandwala Complex, past Four Bungalows and along the Juhu Versova Link Road, and the chariots reach ISKCON Juhu in the evening for the maha arati that closes the day. The order of the day is in the programme above.
The procession is part of a five-day festival at the temple, with personal arati for the deities. The meaning of the chariots and the Puri original are on the Rath Yatra page and Rath Yatra of Puri.
Three ways to see it
The procession moves slowly through the afternoon, so you can choose a part of the day rather than the whole route.
The start in Andheri West
Be at Shastri Nagar for the inauguration and the first pull. Andheri suburban station and the Andheri and D.N. Nagar Metro stations are the way in. See Andheri.
New Link Road and Lokhandwala
The middle of the route, where the chariots pick up speed. Walk with the ropes for a stretch, then step out.
The arrival at Juhu
Wait on the Juhu Versova Link Road or in the temple forecourt for the evening maha arati. More about the temple: ISKCON Juhu; Juhu Beach is close by.
Practical notes
The Rath Yatra falls in late June or July, in Mumbai’s monsoon: July, the wettest month, averages about 920 mm of rain over some 23 rainy days, about 30°C by day and very humid.
- Use the trains — The route roads close in the afternoon; the Metro and Andheri suburban station stay usable. During heavy-rain alerts check the IMD forecast and follow local authorities. More: Mumbai Metro, Mumbai safety.
- Keep clear of the wheels — The chariots lurch forward without warning. Stay on the rope or well to the side, never in front of a wheel.
- Prasadam — Prasadam (blessed food) is served free along the way and at the temple. Donation tiers for sponsoring the festival are separate and optional.
- At the temple — Shoes off, shoulders and knees covered. See temple dress code in Mumbai.
- Where to stay — Juhu or Andheri West, between the start and the end. Two weeks ahead is enough: it is a one-day city procession, and the weekend moves prices more than the festival does. See where to stay in Mumbai.
