Mumbai Metro: lines, stations, tickets
For a visitor, Mumbai Metro mostly means Line 3, the Aqua Line: an underground line of 27 stations from Aarey JVLR in the north to Cuffe Parade in the south, through both airport terminals, BKC, Dadar, Worli, CSMT and Churchgate. Fares go by distance, from about ₹10 up to about ₹70 for the full line. The other lines are elevated and serve the suburbs: Line 1 from Versova to Ghatkopar, and lines 2A, 7, 9 and 2B in the north and east.
Metro, and the Aqua Line above all
Line 3 Aqua opened end to end in October 2025 and links the airport, BKC and the southern tip; lines 1, 2A and 7 cover the western suburbs. QR tickets come through WhatsApp.
~₹10–80

Fares and tickets
Fares go by distance on every line. On the Aqua Line MMRC's fare chart starts at about ₹10 for a trip of up to 3 km and reaches about ₹60–70 for the longest journeys; across the network a ride costs roughly ₹10–80.
Tickets are QR codes: buy them at the station or on your phone, including through WhatsApp. MMRC also has its own app, MetroConnect3, for the Aqua Line. Each operator sells tickets for its own lines.
If you plan to ride the Aqua Line a lot in a day or two, MMRC sells an NCMC Tourist Pass with unlimited rides for one or three days; at the price MMRC was advertising it cost about ₹210 for one day and ₹600 for three.
On the Aqua Line, MMRC said when planning the line that only cabin-size luggage would be allowed, not checked-in suitcases; check before arriving with big bags.
From the airport by metro
The Aqua Line is the metro airport link: the station sits at T2 and there is another at T1, and the line runs without changes through BKC to the Fort, Churchgate and Cuffe Parade for at most about ₹70, while a taxi to the south of the city can sit in traffic. This is for the main airport, BOM. The second airport, Navi Mumbai (NMI), is not on the Aqua Line; check which code your ticket shows. More in Mumbai airport.
Metro or local train?
The metro does not replace the suburban railway, it fills its gaps. The local trains (Western, Central and Harbour lines) run every two to five minutes from about ₹5 and are the fastest way around the city outside the peaks (8:00–11:00 and 17:30–21:00); first class costs four to five times more and is far calmer, and women-only coaches are marked. Tickets for the locals come from the RailOne app or the station window, not on board.
The metro wins where the trains do not go: across the suburbs (Line 1 from Andheri to Ghatkopar), in the far northern suburbs (lines 2A, 7 and 9), and on the Aqua Line's underground route to the airport, BKC and Worli. Its trains are air-conditioned with closed doors, which matters in the heat and the crowds. More options, from taxis to ferries, are in getting around Mumbai.
