Mumba Devi Temple
The goddess with the orange face and no mouth is the one the city is named for: Mumba, plus aai, mother in Marathi. She was the patron of the Koli, the first inhabitants of these islands, and of the salt-workers who came after them. The original 14th-century shrine stood at Bori Bunder; the present temple went up in Bhuleshwar in the 18th century and is now wedged between gold and cloth traders, so the noise of the lanes never quite stops at the door. Free to enter, shoes off, and Zaveri Bazaar is next door.
The goddess whose name the city carries: Mumba, mother of the seven islands
