Hyderabad with kids

← Hyderabad

Hyderabad is a good city for children if the day is built around the heat and the distances. The strongest family stops cluster in a few areas: the zoo and the Sudha Cars Museum side by side in Bahadurpura, the science museum and the boats to the Buddha around Hussain Sagar, the crafts village and the lakes in the west. Ramoji Film City, an hour out, takes a whole day. Pick one area per day.

Pick by what your children like

The list above covers the main stops; here is how to choose, with a few places that are not in it.

Animals

Nehru Zoological Park is one of the largest zoos in India, 380 acres with moats instead of bars, a lion and tiger safari and a toy train and battery buggies for the long loops; it borders Mir Alam Tank, which draws migratory birds. For animals in the open, Mahavir Harina Vanasthali on the south-eastern edge is a blackbuck reserve with safari vans and far fewer people. At dawn, peacocks cross the paths of KBR National Park between Jubilee and Banjara Hills.

Science and curious machines

The B.M. Birla Science Museum on Naubat Pahad hill has hands-on galleries, planetarium shows in English, Hindi and Telugu, and a dinosaurium with the skeleton of Kotasaurus, a sauropod about 160 million years old found in Telangana. At the Sudha Cars Museum, a few minutes from the zoo, one man has built more than 250 drivable vehicles from scrap, shaped like a cricket bat, a sofa or a camera. In the Salar Jung Museum, people gather minutes before the hour at the 19th-century musical clock, where a small figure comes out to strike the gong.

Water and space to run

On Hussain Sagar, boats leave Lumbini Park for the granite Buddha statue in the middle of the lake. Durgam Cheruvu has a free promenade, pedal boats and a cable bridge lit after dark. The Hyderabad Botanical Garden near HITEC City is 110 hectares of lawns and themed groves for a picnic, for a token ticket (about ₹50 for adults, ₹20 for children). More on lakes in Hyderabad.

Making things

At Shilparamam, the state crafts village in Madhapur, artisans work at their stalls and the education centre runs short classes and holiday camps in pottery and painting, and there are folk performances in the amphitheatre. Teenagers can try a Cheriyal scroll-painting workshop with a hereditary artist. See workshops in Hyderabad.

A whole day of cinema

Ramoji Film City, about an hour from the centre, is listed by Guinness World Records as the world's largest film studio complex. One ticket, approx. ₹1,550, covers studio tours, stunt shows, rides, a bird park and a butterfly garden; shuttles run between the zones. Arrive at opening: the programme is long.

Evenings with children

The heat makes evenings the best time outdoors for much of the year. At Golconda Fort, the sound-and-light show retells the fort's history after dark, in English, Hindi and Telugu at different times, so check which language slot you are buying; before it, children can try the famous trick at the Fateh Darwaza gate, where a clap under the dome carries to the top of the citadel. Hussain Sagar and Durgam Cheruvu are at their best at sunset, when the statue and the bridge are lit. If your dates fall between early January and mid-February, Numaish, the big exhibition on the Nampally grounds, fills two thousand stalls with handicrafts and snacks, with rides between the rows; it opens in the late afternoon, and weekday evenings are far less crowded than weekends.

Planning with children

A few rules that keep the day easy.

  • Mind the closing days — The zoo is closed on Mondays; the Salar Jung Museum and Chowmahalla Palace are closed on Fridays.
  • Outdoors early, indoors at midday — In April and May average highs are 38–40°C. See the zoo, the parks and Golconda in the morning, and keep the middle of the day for museums. November to February is the easiest season.
  • Pair places that are close — Zoo and Sudha Cars in Bahadurpura; the science museum, Birla Mandir and Lumbini Park around Hussain Sagar; Shilparamam, Durgam Cheruvu and the Botanical Garden in the west.
  • The Old City is hard work with small children — The lanes around Charminar and Laad Bazaar are packed in the evening, and the bangle workshops are small, hot rooms with open flames. Go in the morning, and keep bags in front.
  • Golconda needs shoes and water — The climb to the top is about 380 stone steps with little shade.
