Where to watch the sunset in Hyderabad
Hyderabad sits on the Deccan granite, and its best sunsets come from that rock: boulders around Durgam Cheruvu and Khajaguda, a domed hill at Moula Ali, the low hill of Taramati Baradari looking back at Golconda. The rest is water: Hussain Sagar in the middle of the city and Osman Sagar on its western edge. Here is which spot gives what, and where to go for the sunrise instead.

Sunset spots, and what each one gives
What each spot gives, and how they differ.
Durgam Cheruvu, the Secret Lake
A Qutb Shahi-era reservoir in a bowl of granite between Jubilee Hills and HITEC City, hidden until you reach the edge. At golden hour the sun drops behind the rocks first and the cable-stayed bridge lights up second. The promenade is free. More.
Taramati Baradari
A Qutb Shahi pavilion with twelve open arches on a low hill; the roof looks straight back towards Golconda Fort, which is why it is worth timing for sunset. Telangana Tourism runs it as a cultural complex with music and dance evenings. More.
Moula Ali Dargah and hill
484 broad steps up a granite dome in the north-east to a Qutb Shahi-period shrine. A rock ledge behind it opens onto one of the widest views of Hyderabad and Secunderabad together, at its best as the light goes. Free; shoes off at the shrine. More.
Khajaguda Hills (Fakhruddingutta)
Balanced granite boulders behind the Financial District, with caves to scramble through and a Sufi tomb, a Vishnu temple and a Meher Baba shrine on the summit. People come at either end of the day. Nothing marks it as a sight; wear grippy shoes and carry water.
Hussain Sagar and Lumbini Park
The classic city-centre sunset is from the water: boats from Lumbini Park go out to the 18-metre granite Buddha, and the last hour before sunset is the best slot, with the statue's lights coming on as you return. Tank Bund and Necklace Road carry on along the shore. More.
Osman Sagar (Gandipet Lake)
The 1920 reservoir about 20 km west, with walks along the bund and a lot of open sky; the last hour of light is the time. The lakeside park is open roughly 6:00 to 18:00. Chilkur Balaji temple is close by. More.
Golconda, Birla Mandir and a table with a view
Golconda Fort has the panorama most people come for: from the Bala Hisar at the top, about 380 steps up, domes and minarets lie one way and the modern skyline the other. The fort's official hours are 9:00 to 17:00, so the sunset itself is better watched from Taramati Baradari, which faces it. If you stay on, the sound-and-light show starts in the evening, in English first: 18:30 from November to February, 19:00 from March to October.
Birla Mandir, the white marble Venkateswara temple on Naubat Pahad, has viewing platforms that take in both the old city and HITEC City, and the marble is softly lit in the evening.
Over dinner: Olive Bistro, a Mediterranean rooftop above Durgam Cheruvu, is built for golden-hour tables, and Fusion 9 has an outlet by the same lake. More in rooftop restaurants.
Where to catch the sunrise
KBR National Park in Jubilee Hills is where the city walks at first light: the inner park opens about 5:30, the birds are loudest then and peacocks cross the paths. The outer track is free.
Ameenpur Lake on the north-western edge is a dawn place in winter, when flamingos, pelicans and painted storks may turn up; a birding group's weekend walk is the easiest way in.
Ananthagiri Hills, about 80 km west, is for misty mornings straight after the monsoon, from September to December. Khajaguda's boulders work at sunrise too.
Which months suit a sunset
November to February is the dry season, with hardly any rain. In April and May average highs reach 38–40°C, so the last hour of light is the most comfortable time outdoors. From June to October the monsoon brings cloud and rain, heaviest in July and August. See Hyderabad weather.
