Hyderabad

How to reach Hyderabad

← Hyderabad

The main gateway is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) at Shamshabad, south of the city: by the airport's own figures it is about 25 km from the MGBS bus station in the centre and 35 km from Secunderabad station. It has direct flights from the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Europe. There is no metro from the airport, so the last stretch is by Pushpak bus or app cab. Trains arrive at three stations that are far apart, and the overnight bus from Bengaluru is one of the busiest in India. Below: how to get into town, which station to aim for and what the main routes cost.

Rajiv Gandhi International (HYD)

Shamshabad, about 30 km south of the city and open around the clock. The metro does not reach it and will not for years, so the road is the whole trip: 45 to 75 minutes.

Best option

By train

Three stations, and they are far apart: Secunderabad Junction is the main one, Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) sits closest to the old city, Kacheguda handles southern routes. Check which one is on your ticket.

Overnight sleeper bus

The Bengaluru run is one of the busiest in the country: hundreds of departures a night, so a seat turns up even on the day.

From the airport into the city

The road is the whole trip, about 45–75 minutes: the airport gives about 45 minutes to MGBS and about an hour to Secunderabad station. Prices are approximate. More on the airport page.

Pushpak airport buses (~₹100–300)

Air-conditioned electric TGSRTC buses leave from the terminal on five routes: AA to Secunderabad via Aramghar, MGBS and the Secretariat; AC to JBS via Aramghar, NMDC and Panjagutta; AJ to Miyapur via Gachibowli, HITEC City and JNTU, the most frequent; AL to JBS via LB Nagar and Uppal; AK to Lingampally along the Outer Ring Road. By the timetable on the airport website, AJ runs roughly every 15–20 minutes and the others every 20–60 minutes; all except AK run through the night (AK from about 7:30 to 22:30). Check the current timetable there.

Uber, Ola or Rapido (~₹600–900)

The apps work at the terminal day and night and cost about the same as the taxi counter. With luggage or a late landing, this is the simple answer.

Flights to Hyderabad

HYD is the fourth-busiest airport in India by passengers and has domestic flights from every major Indian city. Direct international services include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat and Riyadh in the Gulf, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, London Heathrow with British Airways and Frankfurt with Lufthansa. Airline networks change, so check the current schedule before you plan around a route.

By train: which station and from where

Hyderabad has three main stations, and your ticket names one of them. Secunderabad Junction, the largest, is the headquarters of the South Central Railway zone; Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) is closest to the Old City; Kacheguda handles southern routes, including the Vande Bharat from Bengaluru. Begumpet and Lingampally are smaller stops. Check which one is on your ticket before you book a cab. More on railway stations. Typical routes (approximate fares):

From Bengaluru: ~8 h, ~₹1,300–1,600

Vande Bharat chair car to Kacheguda. See also Hyderabad to Bengaluru.

From Mumbai: ~13–17 h, from ~₹435

Overnight expresses in sleeper class, or about ₹1,600 in 2A (two-tier AC).

From Delhi: ~22 h

The Rajdhani Express to Secunderabad.

By bus and by road

Overnight sleeper buses are the cheap way in from Bengaluru: TGSRTC Garuda Plus coaches and private sleepers take about 8–10 hours for roughly ₹456–1,544, and with hundreds of departures a night a seat usually turns up even on the day. The city's main bus station is the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), which is also on the metro.

By road, Hyderabad sits on NH-44, the north–south highway from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, and on NH-65 between Pune and Machilipatnam on the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

After you arrive

The city is large and spread out; these save time.

  • Use the metro across town — Three lines (Red, Blue and Green) run from about 6:00 to 23:00, for about ₹10–60 a ride. The Blue Line bypasses the HITEC City and Gachibowli traffic. More on the metro.
  • Charminar is off the metro map — Neither Charminar nor Golconda has a station: take the Green Line to MGBS and finish by auto-rickshaw, or ride door to door by app.
  • A smart card pays for itself — A ₹100 metro card takes ten percent off every ride and saves the ticket queue at rush hour. Every train has a marked coach for women.
  • Book autos through an app — Everyone books auto-rickshaws through Rapido, Uber, Ola or Namma Yatri, so the price is fixed before you get in. A pickup surcharge of about ₹20 is standard, not a scam. More on getting around Hyderabad.
