How to get around Hyderabad

← Hyderabad

Hyderabad is large and spread out, and most visitors move by two things: ride-hailing apps for door-to-door trips and the metro for long runs along its three lines. Uber, Ola and Rapido all work here, Rapido is usually the cheapest, and auto-rickshaws are booked through the same apps, so the price is fixed before you get in. The catch: the metro does not reach Charminar, Golconda or the airport.

Hyderabad Metro: three lines

Sixty-nine kilometres over Red, Blue and Green, running 6:00 to 23:00. Blue is the way past the HITEC City and Gachibowli jams; Green ends at MGBS, the closest the network gets to the old city.

~₹10–60

Cabs and bike taxis through apps

The aggregators are unusually strong here and Rapido is normally the cheapest of them. A pickup surcharge of about ₹20 is standard and not a scam.

from ~₹100 across the centre

Auto-rickshaws

The meter tariff exists on paper; in practice everyone books through an app, and then the price is fixed before you get in.

from ~₹20 plus ~₹11–17 per km

MMTS suburban trains

Secunderabad to Lingampally and Falaknuma for the price of a cup of tea. Trains are rarer than metro, so it is worth it when your route matches the line.

~₹5–11

TGSRTC city buses

The network is dense and covers what the metro misses, but the route numbers take some learning and the boards are often in Telugu.

from ~₹10

Taxis and ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing is unusually strong in Hyderabad, and for most visitors it is the default. The cards above give approximate fares for each mode; a few things the numbers do not say:

  • Three apps, one habit: Uber, Ola and Rapido all cover the city. Rapido is normally the cheapest of them, and bike taxis are booked through the apps as well.
  • Autos go through the apps too. The auto-rickshaw meter tariff exists on paper, but in practice people book autos in the same apps (Namma Yatri as well), and the fare is fixed before the ride.
  • A pickup charge of about ₹20 is normal, not a scam.
  • From the airport, an app cab costs about the same as the taxi counter; details on Hyderabad airport to city.

For a long day across town, compare one door-to-door cab with a metro ride plus a short auto at each end: on the west side the Blue Line runs past the HITEC City and Gachibowli jams.

The metro: three lines

Hyderabad Metro has three lines. The Red Line runs from Miyapur to LB Nagar via Ameerpet, Nampally and MG Bus Station. The Blue Line runs from Nagole to Raidurg via Secunderabad and Ameerpet, and serves HITEC City. The short Green Line links JBS Parade Ground with MG Bus Station via Secunderabad. You change lines at Ameerpet (Red and Blue), MG Bus Station (Red and Green) and JBS Parade Ground (Green and Blue).

The first train leaves at 06:00; the last trains leave the terminal stations at 23:00 on the Red and Blue lines and at 23:35 on the Green Line. Paper QR tickets are sold at station counters, and digital QR tickets through PhonePe, Paytm, Rapido, T-Savaari or WhatsApp. A smart card costs ₹100 (non-refundable) and is topped up at station counters or online through PhonePe, Paytm or T-Savaari. Every train has a marked coach for women. More on the Hyderabad metro page.

How to reach the main areas

No metro nearby: a taxi or a bus. See Golconda Fort.

  3. Hussain Sagar and Tank Bund

No metro station on the shore; finish the trip by auto or app cab. See Hussain Sagar.

  4. Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills

Blue Line stations at Jubilee Hills Check Post and Road No 5 Jubilee Hills, and Irrum Manzil on the Red Line near Banjara Hills; the last stretch is usually by auto or app cab.

  5. HITEC City

Blue Line to Hitec City or Raidurg.

  6. Secunderabad

Blue Line to Secunderabad East or Paradise; the MMTS suburban trains also start here.

MMTS trains and city buses

The MMTS suburban trains, run by South Central Railway, connect Secunderabad with Lingampally and Falaknuma for a few rupees. They run less often than the metro, so they are worth it only when your route matches the line. TGSRTC city buses form a dense network that covers what the metro misses, but the route numbers take some learning and the boards are often in Telugu only. To arrive in or leave the city, see how to get to Hyderabad and the railway stations: there are three, far apart, so check which one is on your ticket.

Safety on the move

Women can use the marked women's coach on every metro train. For general advice, see is India safe and emergency numbers in India; the single emergency number is 112.
