Hyderabad airport (HYD) to the city

← Hyderabad

Hyderabad has one passenger airport, Rajiv Gandhi International (HYD) at Shamshabad, about 30 km south of the city. There is no metro to it, so every route into town is by road: the Pushpak airport bus, which runs through the night, or a cab booked through Uber, Ola or Rapido, or at the airport taxi counters. Allow 45 to 75 minutes.

Shamshabad, about 30 km south of the city and open around the clock. The metro does not reach it and will not for years, so the road is the whole trip: 45 to 75 minutes.

Airport to city: the options

All authorised transport runs around the clock, according to the airport. Screens at baggage claim show live cab availability and the bus schedules, and staff at the cab zones help with questions.

Pushpak airport bus (approx. ₹100–300)

TGSRTC's air-conditioned electric buses leave every 45–60 minutes for the main districts and every 15 minutes for Gachibowli, through the night, so a 3 a.m. landing is not a problem. Follow the signs to the Pushpak pickup point; a return trip within ten days gets 10% off.

Uber, Ola or Rapido (approx. ₹600–900)

App cabs work at the terminal day and night and cost about the same as the taxi counter. With luggage or a late arrival this is the simple answer.

Airport and prepaid taxis

Airport taxis book at counters in arrivals and serve only airport passengers. On the airport website the counter-booked radio taxi fare (Alyte) is approximately ₹895 for the first 20 km plus about ₹23 a km after that; other operators charge more.

Tips for the ride in

A few things that save time once you have landed.

  • Use authorised transport only — The airport asks passengers to take only authorised services: the counters, app cabs from the marked zones and the Pushpak bus. A help desk near Aeroplaza answers questions about the ride.
  • Charminar and Golconda are off the metro — For the Old City, go door to door by cab, or change in town to the Green Line to MGBS and finish by auto-rickshaw. See Hyderabad metro.
  • Going on by train? — Hyderabad has three main stations far apart: Secunderabad Junction, Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) and Kacheguda. Check which one is on your ticket before you pick a bus or cab. See Hyderabad railway stations.
  • Staying out west? — If your hotel is in HITEC City or Gachibowli, the 15-minute Pushpak service to Gachibowli is the most frequent bus from the airport. Areas are compared in where to stay.

About the airport

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was inaugurated in March 2008, built in 31 months, and replaced Begumpet Airport, which until then was the city's only civilian airport. It has a single integrated passenger terminal and two runways, and with about 5,500 acres it is the largest airport in India by area.

The airport is run by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, a joint venture of the GMR Group (74%), the Airports Authority of India (13%) and the Government of Telangana (13%). By its own figures it handles over 30 million passengers a year and is the fourth busiest airport in India. It was the first airport in India to introduce e-boarding.
