Where to stay in Hyderabad

← Hyderabad

For sightseeing, the best bases are Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills, green and full of restaurants, or the hotels around Hussain Sagar, which sit in the middle of the city. HITEC City suits business trips, Secunderabad suits a train arrival, and the Old City has almost no hotels on this list (the nearest is in Abids). Hyderabad is spread out, so choose the area first and the hotel second.

The areas, and who each suits

The hotels above are grouped by budget; here they are sorted by area. Prices are on the booking sites.

Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills: quiet, green, restaurants

The base for the city's best restaurants and third-wave coffee, with few sights of its own, so sightseeing usually means a cab ride. From the list: Taj Krishna on thirteen acres of grounds, Park Hyatt, the more affordable Taj Deccan and the 85-room Lemon Tree Hotel off Road No. 2.

Hussain Sagar: the middle of the city

A central position, close to the Tank Bund promenade and the boats to the Buddha statue. From the list: The Park, a design hotel near the lake between Banjara Hills and the lakefront.

HITEC City and Madhapur: business and the metro

The IT district on the Blue Line (Hitec City and Raidurg stations). It is a business base, far from the Old City and Golconda. Here are both hostels, Zostel and The Hosteller, the four-star Lemon Tree Premier with its rooftop pool, and ITC Kohenur above Durgam Cheruvu lake.

Secunderabad: for a train arrival

The former British cantonment around the main junction station, home of the Paradise biryani flagship. None of the hotels in the list is here; the area is practical if you are in transit. Metro at Secunderabad East and Paradise.

Abids, near the Old City: character over comfort

The closest hotel in the list is the Taj Mahal Hotel in Abids, an independent 1948 heritage building (not part of the Taj group), with simple rooms and a well-loved vegetarian Udupi restaurant.

Stays that are a reason to come

  • Taj Falaknuma Palace: a restored Nizam palace on a hill above the city, now one of India's grandest hotels. Staying here is the experience itself: antique furniture, marble halls and gardens kept from the Nizams' time.
  • Haritha Taramati Baradari Resort: a Telangana Tourism resort built around the 17th-century Taramati Baradari pavilion, a few minutes from Golconda Fort. The 28 rooms are modest government-hotel standard; you come for the monument and the quiet.
  • Ramoji Film City: the film city's own hotels (Sitara, Tara and others), an option for families who give it more than a day. See Ramoji Film City.

More options by budget: budget hotels, boutique hotels and luxury hotels in Hyderabad.

Before you book

A few things that decide whether a base works.

  • Match the area to your plans — Golconda, the Old City and HITEC City are far apart, and there is no metro to Charminar or Golconda. See getting around Hyderabad.
  • Check which Ginger you book — Ginger, the Tata group's budget brand, has properties on Airport Road and in Genome Valley, both well outside the centre.
  • The airport is 30 km out — Rajiv Gandhi International is at Shamshabad, about 30 km south, with no metro; plan the first night with that in mind. See Hyderabad airport.
  • Summer power backup — From April to June the heat is serious; The Hosteller, for one, points to its power backup.
