Hyderabad railway stations
"Hyderabad railway station" can mean several places. The station actually named Hyderabad is Hyderabad Deccan (code HYB) at Nampally, closest to the Old City. The biggest and busiest is Secunderabad Junction (SC), and Kacheguda (KCG) handles many southern routes. Lingampally in the west and the new Charlapalli terminal in the east take some long-distance trains too. Read the station code on your ticket first: the stations are far apart, and crossing the city takes time.
By train
Three stations, and they are far apart: Secunderabad Junction is the main one, Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) sits closest to the old city, Kacheguda handles southern routes. Check which one is on your ticket.
Overnight sleeper bus
The Bengaluru run is one of the busiest in the country: hundreds of departures a night, so a seat turns up even on the day.
The stations and what they serve
All of them belong to the South Central Railway, whose headquarters is in Secunderabad. The code is the quickest way to tell them apart.
Secunderabad Junction (SC): the main one
The city's first station, opened in 1874 by the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway, with a fort-like Nizam-era portico. Its ten platforms handle more than 150,000 passengers a day; the trains include the Rajdhani from Delhi (about 22 hours). The station is being rebuilt, so expect building work around the entrances. Metro: Secunderabad East on the Blue Line and Secunderabad West on the Green Line.
Hyderabad Deccan (HYB), Nampally: closest to the Old City
A terminus, so trains arrive and leave in one direction only, with six platforms; the main platform 4 is straight ahead of the entrance. Trains such as the Charminar, Telangana and Godavari expresses start here. It is the nearest main station to the Salar Jung Museum and Charminar, and a covered walkway leads to Nampally metro station on the Red Line.
Kacheguda (KCG): many southern routes
Built in 1916 under the last Nizam as the railway's headquarters, with domes and minarets on the facade and a small rail museum inside. Trains run from here to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai, Tirupati, Mangaluru and Madurai among others; the Vande Bharat from Yesvantpur in Bengaluru arrives here, in about 8 hours in a chair car (approx. ₹1,300–1,600).
Lingampally (LPI) and Charlapalli (CHZ): the outer terminals
Lingampally, in the west, is the end of the MMTS suburban lines from Falaknuma and Hyderabad Deccan, and some long-distance trains start here. Charlapalli, on the eastern edge, is the newest terminal, opened to ease the crowding at the older stations; it is linked to the city by MMTS, TGSRTC buses, autos and taxis.
From the station into the city
Metro. Secunderabad and Nampally sit right on the metro, which runs about 06:00–23:00 for approx. ₹11–69 a ride. Neither Charminar nor Golconda has a metro station: take the Green Line to MGBS and finish by auto-rickshaw.
MMTS. The suburban trains link Secunderabad, Hyderabad Deccan and Kacheguda with Lingampally and Falaknuma for approx. ₹5–11. They run less often than the metro, so they pay off when your route matches the line.
Autos and cabs. Door to door, the simple answer is an app: Uber, Ola and Rapido for cabs (from about ₹100 across the centre) and for auto-rickshaws too, so the price is fixed before you get in. More in getting around Hyderabad.
To the airport. The metro does not reach Rajiv Gandhi International at Shamshabad, about 30 km south: it is a Pushpak airport coach (approx. ₹100–300) or a cab (approx. ₹600–900), 45–75 minutes on the road. See Hyderabad airport.
Hyderabad bus stands: MGBS and JBS
Long-distance buses leave from two big stations run by the state corporation, TGSRTC.
MGBS, Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (also called Imlibun), on an island in the Musi south of the centre, is one of the largest bus stations in India, on about 20 acres. It serves Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and runs daily to Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and beyond. The MG Bus metro station connects it directly to the Red and Green lines.
JBS, Jubilee Bus Station, in Secunderabad, has 18 platforms and stands about 2 km from Secunderabad railway station and about 800 m from Parade Ground metro station.
The overnight run to Bengaluru is one of the busiest in the country: TGSRTC Garuda Plus and private sleepers, about 8–10 hours, approx. ₹456–1,544, with so many departures that a seat usually turns up on the day. Compare train and bus on Hyderabad to Bengaluru.
Before you travel
A few habits that save a missed train.
- Check the code, not the city — SC, HYB, KCG, LPI and CHZ all appear as "Hyderabad" or "Secunderabad" on booking sites. Plan the ride to the station around the code on the ticket.
- Leave more time than the map suggests — The stations are spread across a large city, and the roads jam. Where your station is on the metro, the train is the safer way to arrive on time.
- A metro card for several rides — A smart card (about ₹100, non-refundable, one per person) is topped up at stations or online, so you skip the ticket queue at rush hour.
- Women's coach on the metro — Half of the first or last coach, 21 seats, is reserved for women, depending on the direction of travel.
