Places to visit near Hampi

← Hampi

The best trips out of Hampi stay within about 40 km. Across the Tungabhadra lie Anegundi, the older village the empire grew from, Anjanadri hill and Sanapur Lake; to the south are the sloth bears of Daroji and the dam at Hosapete; further out, the stork colony of Ankasamudra and the embroidery of Sandur. The cities in the list below are 250 km or more away as the crow flies: onward journeys, not day trips.

Gokarna

A Karnataka temple town that doubles as a quieter Goa: pilgrims fill the ancient Mahabaleshwar shrine while a cliff path links half-moon beaches named Om and Paradise. Empty sands, sunset walks and a slower coast: Goa without the crowds.

Murudeshwar

On a spit of the Karnataka coast stands one of the world's tallest Shiva statues, gazing out to sea from Kanduka hill. The draw is the jaw-dropping view, and a selfie beside the giant Shiva.

~250 km as the crow flies

Goa

India's easiest, sunniest escape: a beach for every mood, buzzing markets, Portuguese forts and churches, and a coastal pace that asks nothing of you. Party up north, slow down south: the gentlest way to fall for India.

~280 km as the crow flies

Udupi

A small coastal town with an outsized culinary shadow: the Udupi restaurants found all over India take their name and their vegetarian repertoire from here. At its centre is the 13th-century Krishna Matha, where the deity is seen through a silver-plated window and eight monasteries take turns running the temple.

~290 km as the crow flies

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

Across the river: the Anegundi side

One long day by motorboat and scooter, or by the road bridge at Anegundi.

Anegundi and Gagan Mahal

The dynasty's first seat, older than the imperial city and held in local tradition to be part of Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom of the Ramayana. A working village of fort gates, the Ranganatha temple and banana plantations, with Gagan Mahal, a 16th-century pavilion restored with the Deccan Heritage Foundation, on the square. A guided two-hour village walk with a banana-fibre craft session and home lunch costs approx. ₹1,750–5,800 per person depending on group size, booked and paid in advance.

Anjanadri Hill

The hill held to be Hanuman's birthplace, a claim contested by Tirumala and others. A long stair, about 462 steps by the district's count, climbs to a small temple with Hanuman cut into the rock and a view over the whole boulder country. Go for sunrise and set out in the dark; allow 45–60 minutes for the climb and bring your own water.

Pampa Sarovar and Sanapur Lake

The sacred lotus tank of Pampa Sarovar is for early morning, the boulder-ringed reservoir of Sanapur for late afternoon. More on both in Lakes in Hampi.

Nava Brindavana

A small island reached by coracle from the Anegundi bank, with the samadhi shrines of nine Madhva saints around Vyasatirtha, guru to Krishnadevaraya. Rituals end by noon, so go early and dress modestly.

Onake Kindi rock art

Neolithic and Iron Age paintings in red ochre and white (bulls, riders, peacocks) in rock shelters off the Anegundi–Sanapur road. Nothing marks the turning, so take a local guide from Anegundi.

South and further out

Easiest by scooter or a rickshaw hired for the day.

Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

About 15 km away, the first reserve in Asia created for sloth bears. Bears are watched from the Karadikallu Gudda tower in the last hours of daylight, when they come down onto the rocks. Entry is approx. ₹50 for Indians and ₹300 for foreigners, with vehicle and guide extra; bring binoculars and dark clothing. Daroji

Tungabhadra Dam and Gardens

At Hosapete, about 15 km from the ruins: gardens below the dam, a view over the reservoir and a musical fountain at about 7 pm; entry approx. ₹20.

Ankasamudra

A village tank about 40 km out, now a bird conservation reserve and Ramsar wetland, where thousands of painted storks, cormorants and ibises nest in the acacias. Go from November to February.

Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra

In the hill town of Sandur, an artisans' society working since 1988: Lambani embroidery with a geographical indication, khadi and block printing, sold at fixed prices. The road through the Sandur hills is part of the reason to go.

How to get around for the day

A scooter (approx. ₹400–700 a day) or a rickshaw for the day (approx. ₹1,000–1,500) covers everything on this page. For the far bank, the motorboat crosses roughly 07:00–17:30 for approx. ₹50–100 per person; by road, the far bank is a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, and that is the only way when the monsoon river stops the boats. From March, plan outings for the early morning and late afternoon. More in Getting around Hampi and Bike rental in Hampi.
