Bike rental in Hampi
The ruins of Hampi are scattered over some 25 km² of rock and banana fields, and a rented scooter is what turns them into one site instead of three separate outings. Expect roughly ₹400–700 a day, ₹700–1,000 at peak; off-season prices drop by up to half. A bicycle, at about ₹100–250 a day, is the right speed for the sacred centre and the road to Vittala.

~₹400–700 a day, ~₹700–1,000 at peak
🚤 When the river rises the boats stop, and the way to the far bank becomes a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge (about ~₹500–800 by tuk-tuk).
💵 The boatmen take no cards and no UPI, and there is nothing resembling a ticket office on either bank.
🎟 Vehicles stop at the ticket office and the remaining kilometre is walked or covered by electric cart for about ~₹20 one way.

Scooter: ~₹400–700 a day
The best way to see the whole site in a day or two; ~₹700–1,000 at peak, up to half less off-season.
Bicycle: ~₹100–250 a day
Perfect for the sacred centre and the road to Vittala. Surfaces range from tarmac to sand, and a basic bicycle handles most of them; take a geared one if you plan to go past Kamalapura, and ride early.
Rickshaw for the day: ~₹1,000–1,500
The sensible choice in the heat or with a family: one driver, a fixed loop of the main groups, shade between stops. Agree the list of sites before you start.
Where a bike takes you
From Hampi Bazaar the road runs past the sacred centre to the Vittala Temple; vehicles stop at the ticket office, and the last kilometre is walked or covered by electric cart for about ₹20 one way. The Royal Centre, with the Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables, is about 15 minutes from the bazaar by bicycle or rickshaw, and the Archaeological Museum at Kamalapura is on the way (closed on Fridays). On the far bank, travellers ride mopeds out to Sanapur Lake, about 4 km from the Virupapur Gaddi crossing, and on to Anegundi. A scooter also makes the late-afternoon bear watch at Daroji an easy half-day. Buses, boats and rickshaws are in Getting around Hampi.
The river splits the map
The Tungabhadra has no bridge between the bazaar and the far bank. People cross to Virupapur Gaddi and Anegundi by motorboat, roughly 07:00–17:30, for approx. ₹50–100 per person. By road the far bank is a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, and when the river rises in the monsoon the boats stop, leaving the detour as the only way. It is simplest to rent on the bank where you are staying.
Before you ride
The UK government's travel advice for India covers the basics.
- Licence — Carry an International Driving Permit together with your home licence; for UK drivers the FCDO names the 1949 version of the permit, and it has to be obtained before you travel.
- Helmet and shoes — Wear a helmet and proper footwear on a motorbike or scooter.
- Not after dark — Avoid riding at night and in fog: accidents are common in low visibility, and wandering livestock makes the roads more dangerous.
- Ride early from March — From March the heat runs the day: ride in the early morning and late afternoon and rest in between.
- Agree the rate — Settle the price and the return time before you take the keys.
