Jalebi in Delhi

Delhi's benchmark jalebi comes from one corner booth: Old Famous Jalebi Wala at Dariba Corner in Chandni Chowk, frying in pure desi ghee for well over a century. Its jalebi is thick, crunchy and dripping, and generations of Delhiites judge every other one against it. It is a five-minute stop, mostly cash, and worth it only while the jalebi is hot.

Old Famous Jalebi Wala, Dariba Corner

The booth stands at Dariba Corner in Chandni Chowk, the old bazaar our guide counts among India's best places for street food. What sets the jalebi apart is the fat: pure desi ghee rather than oil, and the spirals come out thick, crunchy and dripping. It is eaten on the spot, standing by the booth.

Cash is the safe assumption. Price level ₹.

✅ How to get it right

  • Hot or not at all: jalebi is eaten while the shell still cracks and the inside is molten syrup. If the tray looks as if it has been sitting, wait for a fresh batch from the pan.
  • Morning food: in much of North India jalebi is eaten in the morning, often with a bowl of thick milk or rabri.
  • Diet: the Indian jalebi is a maida (refined wheat flour) batter fried and soaked in sugar syrup, with no egg in the recipe. Here it is fried in ghee, so it is vegetarian but not vegan.
  • Sundays: many Old Delhi shops close on Sunday, and some shut through the day during Ramzan.

Jalebi on an Old Delhi walk

Jalebi is rarely the only stop. In the mornings Chandni Chowk's halwais serve nagori halwa; in winter the carts around Kinari Bazaar sell daulat ki chaat; and in summer kulfi waits near Chawri Bazar. The Delhi Heritage Walks food walk through these lanes starts from about ₹1,000 with food included (approx., checked September 2026); see food tours in Delhi.
