Chanakyapuri

The Diplomatic Mile

← Delhi

Chanakyapuri is New Delhi's diplomatic enclave, laid out in the 1950s around the wide avenue of Shanti Path and named after Chanakya, the adviser of the emperor Chandragupta Maurya. Street life is thin, and people come for a few specific things: the National Rail Museum, the 80-acre Nehru Park, inexpensive state canteens and some of the city's most famous restaurants inside the grand hotels. Delhi Tourism names Lok Kalyan Marg and Jor Bagh on the Yellow Line as the nearest metro stations.

👣 A day in the enclave

Distances here are long and pavements empty, so plan to hop between stops by cab rather than walk the whole way.

  1. Morning: National Rail Museum

Eleven acres of real locomotives and royal carriages laid out like a railway yard, plus an indoor gallery; the easy outing with children. Open 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays; tickets are booked on nrmindia.org, which also posts which rides and simulators are working. From April to June come at opening, as most of the collection stands in the sun. See National Rail Museum.

  2. Lunch: a state canteen

Some state houses run inexpensive canteens. Gujarat Bhawan serves an unlimited vegetarian Gujarati thali; Goa Niwas cooks Konkani home food such as xacuti and sol kadhi. More in vegetarian food in Delhi.

  3. Afternoon: Nehru Park

Eighty acres of lawns laid out in 1969 for the families of the diplomatic missions, now a city park used for morning yoga, art events and occasional open-air concerts. For a slow coffee nearby, Diggin has a leafy courtyard with swings: come for the pasta, not to work.

  4. Evening: the hotel restaurants

At ITC Maurya, Bukhara has served North-West Frontier grills for four decades and is eaten with the hands (there are no forks; its black dal is Dal Bukhara), while Dum Pukht does the slow, sealed-pot Awadhi cooking called dum. Book ahead. More on the dal in dal makhani in Delhi and on the city's tables in Delhi restaurants.

Chanakyapuri and its neighbours

To sleep here: the enclave's grand hotels are in the green-and-quiet section of where to stay in Delhi.

When to come

Avoid Monday, when the Rail Museum is closed. October and February to March are the months for the park and the outdoor museum yard; in May and June do the museum at opening and save the rest for the evening restaurants. From November to January check the air quality and allow for winter fog. The enclave is busiest at dinner, so book the hotel restaurants ahead in any season.
