Hauz Khas Village

Ruins & Bars

← Delhi

Hauz Khas Village is the old settlement around the Hauz Khas Complex in south Delhi: a reservoir dug in the reign of Alauddin Khalji (1296–1316), with a 14th-century madrasa and the tomb of Firuz Shah Tughlaq above it, and, pressed against the ruins, lanes of cafes, bars and boutiques. See the ruins by daylight and stay for the evening. Delhi Tourism names Green Park on the Yellow Line as the nearest metro.

Shopping

A royal tank, then a village of boutiques

Hauz means water tank and khas royal: the reservoir was built by Alauddin Khalji (reigned 1296–1316) to supply Siri, his new fortified city. Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1351–88) had it desilted and lined its banks with an L-shaped range of buildings: the madrasa, a mosque, pavilions and, at the corner, his own tomb.

Designer boutiques began moving into its lanes in the mid-1980s, restaurants followed in the late 1990s, and today about fifty restaurants, bars and cafes are packed into a few lanes.

👣 An afternoon-to-night walk

The order follows the light: ruins first, then food, then music.

  1. Ruins above the lake

Walk the madrasa colonnades and sit on the walls over the water while there is light. The Deer Park beside it is one of the largest green areas in Delhi.

  2. Into the village lanes

Coast Cafe cooks Kerala food (appams, coconut curries) above the lanes; Kunzum runs on pay-what-you-want coffee among walls of books; Hauz Khas Social sits on the edge of the park, looking over the ruins and the reservoir. For Tibetan food there is Yo Tibet.

  3. Aurobindo Market

On Sri Aurobindo Marg, the western edge of Hauz Khas, Midland Book Shop has been selling books across two floors since 1984, and Summer House Cafe keeps a rooftop with live gigs most nights and famously cheap beer.

  4. Jazz to finish

Just outside the village, in Safdarjung Enclave, The Piano Man Jazz Club has live jazz nightly; book a table. Before the metro, Evergreen Sweet House in Green Park Market does mithai (Indian sweets) and vegetarian thalis.

How Hauz Khas differs from its neighbours

  • Mehrauli and Qutub Minar: older and quieter ruins, best on a morning; Hauz Khas is the evening half of the same south Delhi day.
  • Saket: malls and cinemas a short ride south, and a calmer base to sleep in.
  • DLF Cyber Hub: craft beer under glass towers in Gurugram, new India rather than old ruins.

How the city's bar districts compare, and how to get home late: Delhi nightlife. Coffee and laptop days: Delhi cafes.

When to come

The best season is October and February to March, when an evening on the walls is comfortable; in May and June come after the worst heat, and from November to January check the air quality first. Weekday evenings are calmer than Friday and Saturday.

For the ride home, book a cab through an app rather than hailing one on the street, as the UK FCDO advises, especially at night; more in is Delhi safe. Few stays are in the village itself; where to stay in Delhi covers the south Delhi options.
