The National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri is 11 acres of real locomotives and royal carriages, set out like a railway yard, with an indoor gallery for the hot hours. It is open 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays, and tickets are booked on the official site nrmindia.org.
Eleven acres in Chanakyapuri where Indian railway history is parked in the open air: royal saloon carriages with their original panelling, dozens of retired engines, and the Fairy Queen, among the oldest steam locomotives anywhere still able to run. Indoor galleries and simulators fill the hot hours, and a toy train loops the grounds for the price of a separate ticket. Open 10:00–17:00, closed Mondays, ₹50–100 for adults depending on the day. Easily half a day with children.

National Rail Museum timings
The museum's own booking site gives the hours as 10:00 to 17:00, last entry at 16:30. It is closed on Mondays; on a closed day the booking calendar simply shows the date as unavailable, so checking the date there is the quickest way to confirm a holiday closure.
Arriving just before last entry leaves little time for an 11-acre outdoor yard plus the indoor gallery. With children, plan on half a day.
Entry fee and online tickets
Tickets are sold on the museum's official site, nrmindia.org, where you pick a date and the number of adults and children (the child category covers ages 3 to 12). The adult ticket costs ₹50 to ₹100 depending on the day of the week; the fare for your date is shown at booking.
The joy train that loops the grounds needs its own ticket, booked for a time slot. Schools and colleges get 50% off entry for groups of at least 30 on weekdays, with an application on the institution's letterhead; the discount does not apply on weekends and government holidays.
What to see
The museum is laid out like a railway yard: more than 11 acres of full-size locomotives and coaches outdoors, and an indoor gallery with models, photographs and interactive displays. These are the exhibits the museum itself singles out.
Patiala State Monorail
From the Patiala State Monorail Trainways, a steam monorail line opened in 1907. The museum describes its locomotive and coach as the only steam monorail pair still in working condition.
Royal saloons
The Prince of Wales Saloon, the Mysore Maharaja's saloon and the Viceregal Dining Car: carriages built for rulers and viceroys, with their original panelling.
John Morris fire engine
More than a hundred years old and still running on solid rubber tyres.
Steam giants
A Garratt articulated locomotive, a fireless steam locomotive, the F1-734 and the Ramgotty, alongside diesel and electric engines, armoured trains and rail cars.
Indoor gallery
Models, documents, historical photographs and simulators. The best place to sit out the midday heat.
Joy train
A small train that loops the grounds. Separate ticket, booked by time slot.
A short history
The foundation stone was laid by President V.V. Giri on 7 October 1971. The museum opened on 1 February 1977 as the Rail Transport Museum, India's first transport museum, and was renamed the National Rail Museum in October 1995. It is run by the Ministry of Railways and gets around five lakh (500,000) visitors a year.
How to get there
The museum is in Chanakyapuri, the embassy district of New Delhi (postal address: National Rail Museum, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110021). Taxis and app cabs know it by name. For questions, the museum's phone is 011-2688 1826.
