Parks and gardens in Chandigarh
Chandigarh was planned around its greenery, and most of its parks belong to one 8-km strip, Leisure Valley, with a themed garden in almost every sector it crosses. The best known is the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16; the Japanese Garden, the Garden of Silence by Sukhna Lake and the Butterfly Park stand apart, and the cactus garden and the Mughal terraces of Pinjore are just outside the city.

Leisure Valley: the city's park system
Chandigarh's parks are not scattered squares but one designed strip. Leisure Valley runs about 8 km through the city along the bed of a seasonal stream, from Rajendra Park in Sector 1 to the southern edge of the city in Sector 53, and Le Corbusier called it the city's lungs. You can cross half of Chandigarh through parkland, on foot or by bicycle.
The gardens along it each have a theme. The Bougainvillea Garden in Sector 3 was set up in 1976 on 20 acres and grows 65 varieties, trained into arches, bowers and pavilions. The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16 dates from 1967 and covers about 40 acres. Shanti Kunj, also in Sector 16, is five small gardens divided by a stream and planted with medicinal herbs and shrubs. Further south are the Terraced Garden in Sector 33, the Topiary Park in Sector 35, with bushes clipped into bears and elephants, and the Hibiscus Garden and the Garden of Fragrance in Sector 36. Chandigarh Tourism lists Leisure Valley and its gardens as free and open from 05:00 to 21:00.
The Rose Garden
The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16, named after India's former president, is described as the largest rose garden in Asia. Chandigarh Tourism counts about 1,600 varieties in it. The best time is winter and early spring, when the roses bloom. The garden hosts the city's annual Rose Festival, also called the Festival of Gardens, in February or March.
