What each season is good for

Winter, roughly November to February. The cave country around Junnar is best visited from November to February. At Pashan Lake migrant ducks and waders winter from about November to February; more on the birds of Pune page. The paragliding season at Kamshet runs roughly October to May: winter brings thermals, spring ridge soaring. The Empress Botanical Garden holds its big annual flower show around Republic Day week in late January.

Monsoon, June to September. This is the classic season for climbing the Sahyadri forts, Sinhagad, Rajgad and Torna, when the ghats are green and running with water; winter is easier underfoot. The Tamhini Ghat road becomes a corridor of waterfalls from June to September and mostly dries up outside the rains, and Mulshi Lake is greenest during and right after the monsoon. Nothing flies at Kamshet in these months. The Bhimashankar forest climb is done from roughly July to February, but its Shidi Ghat ladder route is dangerous in heavy rain. The tamhan, Maharashtra's state flower, blooms as the monsoon reaches the Ghats, and the Blue Mormon, the state butterfly, is easiest to find along the Ghat roads west of Pune after the rains.

Summer. Pune's thick, spoon-eaten mastani is the summer must, mango above all, and in mango season Durvankur Dining Hall serves aamras, sweet mango pulp, with its thali. See what to eat in Pune.

Festivals that shape the calendar

Ganeshotsav is Pune's signature festival and the historical birthplace of public Ganesh celebrations: ten days of pandals in the old-city peths and a visarjan procession down Laxmi Road that runs for more than a day. Next Ganesh Chaturthi: 4–14 September 2027. Book rooms about a month ahead; prices rise only mildly.

The Wari. Every year the palkhis of the poet-saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram walk from Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur, and arrive in Pune together, usually sixteen days before Ashadhi Ekadashi, resting there a full day before walking on. The whole pilgrimage: 26 June – 14 July 2027 (expected). Book a room about a month ahead and trains or flights about six weeks ahead.

Sawai Gandharva, the Hindustani classical music festival founded by Bhimsen Joshi in 1953, is held in December; passes sell out, so book a room about six weeks ahead and bring a shawl for the cool nights. In the Diwali season (6–11 November 2026) Laxmi Road turns into a decorated crush. All dates are on the festivals in Pune page.
