Festivals of Pune
Pune's signature festival is Ganeshotsav: the city where the public Ganesh festival was revived in the 1890s still runs it with five 'Manache' Ganpati mandals in fixed order and a visarjan procession down Laxmi Road that lasts more than a day. In the monsoon, the palkhis of the Wari to Pandharpur halt in the old city for two nights. In December the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav brings five days of Hindustani classical music.
Pandharpur Wari
Sixteen days before the warkaris reach Pandharpur, the two great palkhis from Alandi and Dehu walk into Pune together on the same evening, rest a full day in two city temples, and leave together before dawn on the third.
📅 26 June 2027
Ganesh Chaturthi
The older, more ceremonial half of the festival: five mandals hold a fixed order of precedence, and the visarjan procession down Laxmi Road runs for more than a day without stopping.
📅 4 September 2027
Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav
Five days of Hindustani classical music under a vast canopy in Pune, at the festival Bhimsen Joshi founded in 1953; much of its famously silent audience still sits on the floor.
Ganeshotsav: ten days and the visarjan
The Peshwas held a public Ganesh festival in Pune in the 18th century; under British rule it became a family affair until Lokmanya Tilak turned it into a mass public event from 1893. Next dates: 4–14 September 2027.
The five Manache Ganpati lead the immersion procession in a fixed order: Kasba Ganpati, Pune's presiding deity, linked to Jijabai and the young Shivaji; Tambdi Jogeshwari; Guruji Talim (founded in 1887 by a Hindu and a Muslim family); Tulshibaug Ganpati, a 13-foot idol in the market; and Kesariwada, founded in 1894 by the trust of Tilak's newspaper Kesari. Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati is not one of the five but is the most visited mandal in the city.
Where to watch. Through the ten days, walk the pandals of the old-city Peths. On Anant Chaturdashi, the five lead the procession down Laxmi Road from late morning; Alka Chowk, where the routes meet, has the densest crowd, and Tilak, Kumthekar and Kelkar roads carry the other routes. Weeks earlier, from roughly mid-July to mid-August, volunteer dhol-tasha troupes rehearse on open grounds around the city, and anyone can stand at the edge and watch; the grounds change from year to year.
Where to stay. Deccan Gymkhana, JM Road, FC Road or Shivajinagar: close to the Peths but outside the closed streets, with metro stations (Deccan Gymkhana, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan, PMC, Civil Court) for procession days. Book about a month ahead and arrive the day before Chaturthi. More on the festival itself: Ganesh Chaturthi.
The Wari: palkhis in the old city
Every year the palkhis (palanquins) carrying the padukas of the poet-saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram set out from Alandi and Dehu, near Pune, and walk for about three weeks to the Vithoba temple at Pandharpur, arriving on Ashadhi Ekadashi. The whole Wari: 26 June – 14 July 2027 (expected).
The two palkhis enter Pune together on one evening, usually sixteen or seventeen days before Ashadhi Ekadashi, meeting at Wakdewadi and Patil Estate Chowk on the Mumbai road. Dnyaneshwar's palkhi halts at the Palkhi Vitthal temple in Bhavani Peth, Tukaram's at the Nivdunga Vitthal temple in Nana Peth; both rest in the city for the whole next day and leave together before dawn on the third. Dnyaneshwar's route then climbs Dive Ghat on the Saswad road, one of the most watched stretches of the walk, about 20 km southeast of central Pune.
Anyone may join for a day. The streets around the halts close to vehicles on the arrival evening and on departure day, so stay within walking distance in the old Peths, or in Deccan, Shivajinagar or Camp. Book a room about a month ahead and trains about six weeks ahead. The palkhi trusts publish the day-by-day route in May. See also Alandi.
Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (December)
Bhimsen Joshi started this festival in 1953 in memory of his guru, the Kirana-gharana singer Sawai Gandharva; the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal runs it. It lasts five days, usually Wednesday to Sunday in the second or third week of December; the dates are announced in October and the line-up in late November.
Since 2018 it has been held at the Maharashtriya Mandal sports complex (Krida Sankul) in Mukund Nagar, under a huge open-sided canopy with chairs and floor seating. Concerts run from mid-afternoon to 10 pm, with the closing Saturday going on to midnight. Season passes are sold online through the festival site, esawai.com, and sell out. December nights are cool, so bring a shawl, and book a room about six weeks ahead.
