Beaches in Murudeshwar
Murudeshwar has one beach of its own, right under the temple and the Shiva statue: worth it for the view at sunset, not for swimming. For calm sand, go about 20 km north to Kasarkod, a Blue Flag beach near Honnavar. The sea is open roughly from November to March.

Murudeshwar Beach: for the view, not for swimming
The town beach runs right up to the foot of Kanduka Hill, so the statue and the gopura stand over the sand. That is the reason to come. It is not a quiet beach: tour buses and pilgrim jeeps unload beside it, vendors work the sand, the waves are strong, and on a busy day there is litter. Treat it as a walk before or after darshan.
The best hour is sunset, when the light falls on the statue; Karnataka Tourism also names sunset as the time to visit. Boats for Netrani Island leave from this beach.
Kasarkod: the calm beach up the coast
For sand without the crowds, go about 20 km north to Kasarkod Eco Beach near Honnavar, at the mouth of the Sharavathi. It holds Blue Flag certification for cleanliness and facilities, one of few Indian beaches that do, and is kept as a family beach with paths, seating and play areas. It faces an open western horizon, so people time it for the last hour of light.
The Sharavathi mangrove boardwalk is right opposite, so the two make one morning or one afternoon. A commercial port is being built along this stretch, and the shoreline next door, at the Kasarkod Tonka turtle-nesting sandspit, is still changing.
Other shores nearby
Smaller stops on the same coast, all north of town towards Honnavar except Netrani, which is offshore.
Apsarakonda
About 16 km north: a quiet beach below a hillock with a sea viewpoint, the Pandava caves and a small waterfall that flows only during and just after the monsoon. October to February is the comfortable window. Bus to Apsarakonda Cross, then an auto.
Ottinene
About 25–30 km north, near Honnavar: a hill above the coast with the beach directly below. No facilities and no lighting; go for the sunset and take a torch.
Netrani Island
About 19 km offshore: a coral reef seen only from the water, because landing on the island is not permitted. Snorkelling and dives with a certified operator run roughly October to May; an introductory dive costs approximately ₹5,000 at Dive Netrani's rates.
Sea safety
The sea off Murudeshwar is open for swimming roughly from November to March. In April, May and October it is often rough; from June to September, in the monsoon, it is closed, diving stops and boats do not go out. The town beach has been closed after drownings, so follow any flags or closures on the day and stay out of the water when the waves are up. Netrani trips are also cancelled whenever the coast guard closes the sea.
Gokarna or Murudeshwar?
They answer different questions. Murudeshwar is a temple-and-view stop with one busy beach; for a beach holiday on this coast people base themselves in Gokarna, about 78 km north, and come to Murudeshwar for the day.
