Beaches in Gokarna: how to choose

← Gokarna

Gokarna has five main beaches, strung south of the town: Gokarna Main Beach under the temple, then Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. Every headland you cross puts another bay between you and the road, the cafes and the crowd. Choose by how much quiet you want, and plan any swimming for November to March, when the sea is open.

The five beaches, north to south

Gokarna Beach is the town's own: the Mahabaleshwara temple and the bazaar stand behind it, and this is where the sacred and the everyday meet. Many pilgrims walk barefoot from the sand up to the temple.

Kudle Beach is the developed one, with cafes on the cliffs, homestays and yoga centres behind the sand, and the town a walk away over the headland. It keeps a balance: some comfort without losing the calm.

Om Beach lies farther out, about 6.5 km from town, and is quieter than Kudle while still having basic facilities. Its name comes from its shape, two crescents joined in the middle, which reads as the syllable ॐ only from the viewpoint on the cliff above.

Half Moon and Paradise have no road at all. They are reached on foot along the cliff path or by boat, and they are the closest Gokarna gets to complete seclusion. On the spur between them, Small Hell Beach is a pocket of dark rock that most walkers pass without noticing; the waves work the rocks hard, so swim there only when the sea is flat. Hell Cliff above it opens the sea on three sides.

Which beach for whom

A quick match of beach to mood.

Kudle or Om

Kudle if you want cafes, a choice of stays and the town on foot. Om if you would rather trade some of that for quiet.

Temple and town

Gokarna Beach, a few minutes from Car Street and the temple.

No road, few people

Half Moon and Paradise, on foot or by boat.

Quiet with a road

Belekan, south of Om and about 8 km from town: the trek ends here and small boats leave for Paradise. Mornings sometimes bring dolphins offshore, and the evenings belong to the village.

Empty sand

Nirvana Beach, kilometres of sand with casuarina groves on the far bank of the Aghanashini estuary. By road it is about 45 km and an hour and a half; boats cross in season. There are no cafes or facilities, so bring water and carry your litter back.

Walking the beaches

The classic way to see the coast is on foot. The trail runs about 10 km from Gokarna Main Beach to Paradise, marked with red-and-white arrows, over laterite cliffs, short boulder scrambles and a few steep pulls.

  1. Start early

Set off by eight in the morning. The walk takes four to seven hours, longer with swims, and shade is scarce, so midday is the hardest stretch.

  2. Come back by boat

Many walk south and return from Paradise or Belekan by boat. Boats between Om, Half Moon and Paradise cost about ₹100–300 per person and run only in season.

  3. Shorter versions

Kudle to Om to Half Moon is the usual short leg, about an hour between bays. Belekan has a road, so you can start the trek from the far end and walk just one leg.

  4. Mind the edges

Keep away from the cliff edges once the light goes, and wear real shoes: the last stretch to the Om viewpoint is bare rock.

Sea safety

From June to September swimming is de facto banned, because people drown here every year; the beach boats stop and the cliff paths turn slippery. In April, May and October the sea is often rough, so go in only on calm days. November to March is when the sea is open. At Small Hell Beach the waves hit the rocks hard: do not swim there unless the sea is flat. More on risks and emergency numbers on the Gokarna safety page.

When to go to the beach

November to February is the best window: dry, about 33–34 °C by day, the sea calm and the boats running. March is still good and dry. Month by month, see Gokarna weather and the best time to visit.
