Gokarna weather

Best time: Nov–Feb

← Gokarna

Gokarna is warm in every month, 30–34 °C by day, so the weather question here is really a question about rain and the sea. November to February is dry, with the sea open and every cove reachable. From June to September the monsoon brings close to nine-tenths of the year's rain, swimming stops and the beach boats stay on the sand. The climate table above comes from the Karwar station, the nearest to town; below is what those numbers mean on the cliff path and the beach.

Jun–Sep swimming de-facto banned (annual drownings); town guesthouses open

What each season feels like

November–February, the dry season. Days of 33–34 °C, nights of 20–23 °C, and almost no rain: 21 mm in November, then close to nothing until April. Humidity is at its lowest of the year (65–71%), the sea is open, and the trek over the headlands is at its best. This is the main season, and the town is busiest around the New Year and Maha Shivaratri.

March–May, the heat builds. Days stay at 34 °C, but nights warm from 23 °C in March to 27 °C in May, and the air gets heavier. The sea turns rough from April, and May brings the first pre-monsoon rain, about 108 mm over four days. Mornings and evenings are the usable part of the day for walking.

June–September, the monsoon. June and July bring 984–994 mm each, with rain on 23–27 days a month and humidity of 85–88%. Days cool to 30–31 °C. Swimming is not allowed in practice, the shacks close, the boats between beaches stop, and the cliff paths get slippery. The guesthouses in town stay open, and the hills inland turn a deep green.

October, the in-between. Rain drops to about 200 mm over eight days, the sea is still rough, and the beach season comes back step by step towards November.

Which beach suits swimming and which does not: Beaches in Gokarna. Karnataka Tourism advises against swimming at Paradise Beach (sharp rocks, strong undercurrents) and calls the main town beach unsuitable for swimming because of strong currents.

Best time to visit Gokarna

For the beaches and the cliff trek, November to February is the window: dry days, an open sea, boats running between the coves. March and April still work if you can take warmer nights and walk early. May is hot and sticky with a rough sea, and June to September is the time to avoid if the sea is the point.

Inland it is a different calendar. Vibhuti Falls is best from October to January, when the flow is still strong and the trail has dried out; at the height of the monsoon the approach can close. Karnataka Tourism puts the Yana rocks at their best from October to March and warns that the trail is slippery and full of leeches in the rains. For a longer look at seasons and crowds, see Best time to visit Gokarna.

Festivals and crowds through the year

The town's calendar follows the temple, and the busiest weeks are set by it, not by the weather.

Maha Shivaratri: February or March

The chariot procession starts at the Maha Ganapati temple and passes down Car Street, and the year's largest pilgrim crowds arrive. Book a room about a month ahead. Next dates: 6–9 March 2027 (expected).

Kartika Purnima: October or November

Karnataka Tourism names the full moon of Kartika as a major event at the Mahabaleshwara temple. Next date: 24 November 2026.

What to pack

Light clothes in any month; the rest depends on the season.

  • Sun protection, all year — A hat, sunscreen and water: daytime highs are 30–34 °C in every month, and the trek has little shade.
  • Shoes with grip — The trek and the Om Beach viewpoint end on bare laterite rock, slippery in any rain.
  • Temple clothes — For the Mahabaleshwara temple, Karnataka Tourism lists a strict dress code: dhoti for men, sari or salwar suit for women, no jeans or shorts.
  • Rain gear for June–September — A rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, a dry bag for the phone, and something against leeches for forest walks.
