Best time to visit Gokarna
The best time to visit Gokarna is November to February. These months are dry, around 33–34 °C by day, with an open sea, boats running between the beaches and dry cliff paths. October and March work with small caveats, April brings warmer nights and a rougher sea, May the first pre-monsoon rain, and from June to September the beaches belong to the monsoon, though the temple town keeps going all year.

Gokarna month by month
Temperatures and rainfall are monthly averages from the Karwar weather station, the nearest on this coast.
| November–February | The season. 33–34 °C by day, 20–23 °C at night, almost no rain. The sea is open, boats run, the trail is dry. |
| March | Still dry and good, a little warmer at night (about 23 °C). The sea stays open. |
| April | Good for the town and the trek, but the sea is often rough and nights stay around 26 °C. |
| May | Better avoided for a beach trip: the pre-monsoon rain arrives (about 108 mm in the month) and the sea is rough. |
| June–September | The monsoon. June and July bring close to 1,000 mm of rain each, with rain on most days. Swimming is effectively banned, the beach boats stop and the shacks close; town guesthouses stay open. |
| October | The shoulder month: still about 200 mm of rain over eight or so days, a rough sea and high humidity, but the season starts to open up. |
Gokarna in the monsoon
The rains change what Gokarna is. With the sea closed and the boats tied up, the beaches are for looking at, not swimming, and the cliff paths between them get slippery, so plan on rickshaws and the road. The temple side carries on: Mahabaleshwara, Koti Teertha and the morning round of shrines do not depend on the weather, and the guesthouses in town stay open. Inland the forest is at its wettest. The approach to Vibhuti Falls can close at the height of the monsoon, and the steps up to the Yana rocks are slippery from June to September. The laterite of Mirjan Fort, on the other hand, is at its most vivid in the rain.
Festivals and crowds
The town's great festival is Maha Shivaratri, when the Mahabaleshwara temple brings out its great chariot and the town hauls it along Car Street behind drum bands. Next dates: 6–9 March 2027 (expected). It falls in the beach season and the town has few rooms, so book about a month ahead and arrive the day before; trains on the Konkan line also fill, and a month ahead is a safe margin. Crowds at the temples peak again at Kartika Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartika: 24 November 2026.
The best hours of the day
In season the day has its own timetable. Early morning belongs to the town: a bath at Koti Teertha, then the temples, before the sand gets hot underfoot. Start the beach trek by eight, because midday on the shadeless cliffs is the hardest stretch. On the Aghanashini estuary the first boat after dawn is the stillest, with kingfishers close in. For sunrise or the hour before sunset, Rama Teertha on the hill looks over the whole town beach and the sea.
