Shri Mahabaleshwara Temple

This is the main Shiva temple in Gokarna, where the Atmalinga is kept, the very one that, according to legend, was given to Ravana. The place is saturated with thousands of years of vibration from prayers and rituals.

Important note: As at many major South Indian temples (including Jagannath Puri, Guruvayoor, and Padmanabhaswamy in Thiruvananthapuram), non-Hindus are not permitted inside the inner sanctum. This is a long-standing norm, not a reaction to any single incident.

However, from outside you can feel the energy of the place, watch the rituals, and buy artifacts from the vendors. The temple stands at the center of town life and is active throughout the day with pilgrims and priests performing ceremonies.
