Munnar's four seasons

Munnar sits at about 1,600 m, so it never gets hot: daytime highs stay between 21 and 26 °C all year. What changes is the rain.

December to February: dry and clear (best)

The driest months: 31 mm of rain in January and February, 99 mm in December, humidity down to 58% in February. Nights fall to 13–14 °C. This is the prime window for the Meesapulimala trek (October to February) and strawberry season in Vattavada (December to February). Eravikulam's tourism zone closes in February for the tahr calving season.

March to May: the warm months (good)

The warmest time, with highs of 26 °C in March and April. The rain builds steadily: 72 mm in March, 165 mm in April, 256 mm in May. Eravikulam is still closed in March and reopens after the calving season.

June to August: the monsoon (better avoid)

The wettest months: 434 mm in June, 419 mm in July, 321 mm in August, humidity above 90%, highs of 21 °C. Landslides close stretches of the Gap Road, and night driving can be banned during heavy-rain alerts. Attukad waterfall is at its fullest, and Chinnar, in the rain shadow east of the hills, stays usable.

September to November: green but wet (good)

The hills are at their greenest, but the rain is far from over: 229 mm in September, 338 mm in October and 277 mm in November, more than in May. Lakkam waterfall is at its best from October to January. In a bloom year, the neelakurinji turns the slopes blue around September and October.

Neelakurinji: the twelve-year bloom

Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) flowers across the high grasslands only once every twelve years, and the bloom is watched in Eravikulam National Park and on the slopes around Top Station and Kundala. Its cycle is one of the best documented of any plant, with mass blooms recorded every twelve years from 1838 to 2018. Munnar has two populations on separate cycles: the Eravikulam grasslands follow that series, while Chokramudi near the Gap Road and Korandakkad near Mattupetty bloomed in 1990, 2002 and 2014 and keep their own twelve-year rhythm. In an off year you will see the grassland, not the blue.

Whatever the month

  • Go out early — By late morning the mist usually covers the view at Top Station, so come before 7 AM. Fog also rolls in on the hill roads by afternoon.
  • Arrive before dark — Hill roads are unlit at night, and in heavy rain night driving can be banned. Plan the drive up from Kochi to finish in daylight: how to get to Munnar.
  • Pack a warm layer — Even in the warmest months nights stay at 15–17 °C, and in January they drop to 13 °C.
  • Check the month in detail — Temperatures, rain and humidity for each month are on the Munnar weather pages.
