Munnar weather

Best time: Oct–Feb

← Munnar

Munnar sits at about 1,600 m, so it never gets hot: daytime highs stay between 21 and 26 °C in every month, and nights fall to 13–17 °C. What changes through the year is the rain. It comes in two waves, the heavy southwest monsoon of June and July and a second wet spell in October and November, while January and February are almost dry. The table above gives long-term average values; below is what they mean for a trip.

The four seasons of Munnar

Season labels follow the month table above.

December to February: the best months

Dry and clear, with about 31 mm of rain in January and February and days of 22–25 °C. Nights are the coldest of the year: the averages say 13–14 °C, but in the estate valleys around town, such as Sevenmallay, Chenduvarai and Letchmi, clear nights can drop to around zero or a degree below, usually from the last week of December into January, with frost on the grass in the morning.

March to May: the warmest stretch

Highs reach 26 °C in March and April, the warmest it gets. Showers build from April (165 mm) into May (256 mm) ahead of the monsoon. One thing to plan around: the Rajamala tourism zone of Eravikulam National Park closes every year in February and March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season.

June to August: monsoon, better avoided

The wettest months: 434 mm in June and 419 mm in July, humidity above 90%, highs of 21 °C. Landslides close stretches of the Gap Road, and night driving can be banned in heavy rain. The waterfalls are at their fullest, Attukad among them, but access to some is closed when the rain is heaviest.

September to November: good, but still wet

Rated a good time, but the numbers show the second rainy season: 229 mm in September, 338 mm in October and 277 mm in November. Plan outdoor things for the mornings, before the fog and cloud come in.

Mornings are clearer

Whatever the month, Munnar's day usually runs clear early and closes in later. Top Station is best before 7 AM, because by late morning the mist usually takes the view, and on the steep roads the fog tends to roll in by the afternoon. Sunrise walks, viewpoints and lake visits all belong to the first half of the day; the afternoon is for the Tea Museum, cafes and the bazaar. Hill roads are unlit, so aim to be off them before dark.

What to pack

Pack for a cool mountain town, not for tropical Kerala.

  • A warm layer — Nights are 13–17 °C on average and colder in the estates from late December; early sunrise trips need a fleece or jacket.
  • Rain gear from April to November — Rain is heavy from May to August and again in October and November; a proper rain jacket works better than an umbrella on windy ridges.
  • Shoes with grip — Trails through tea rows and grassland stay damp for much of the year.
