Munnar

How to reach Munnar

← Munnar

Every route to Munnar ends the same way: about four hours of switchbacks up from the plains. There is no railway and no airport, so the choice is only how you ride that road. The state bus from Ernakulam is the standard way up and costs very little; a taxi from Kochi airport takes the same road at about twenty times the price, door to door.

KSRTC bus from Kochi

The state buses from Ernakulam are the standard way up: 130 km, most of it climbing, with departures spread through the early morning.

Best option

Taxi from Kochi airport

Door to door from COK, and the only comfortable option if you land late or travel with luggage and children.

Nearest station: Aluva

There is no railway to Munnar and there never has been. Trains stop at Aluva or Angamaly, 110 to 120 km short, and the rest is road either way.

In the monsoon landslides close stretches of the Gap Road, and hill roads are unlit at night, so plan to arrive before dark.

The routes in detail

Times and fares are approximate and come from the hubs travellers actually use.

From Kochi by KSRTC bus

Kerala state buses from Ernakulam cover the 130 km in about 4–4.5 hours for approx. ₹130–190. There are four or more a day, leaving from about 02:00 to 10:20. Nothing useful leaves in the afternoon, which is the main thing to plan around.

From Kochi airport (COK) by taxi

A car with driver covers about 110–120 km of hill road in roughly 3.5–4.5 hours, for approx. ₹2,500–4,000. It is the sensible choice if you land late, or travel with children or a lot of luggage.

By train to Aluva or Angamaly

Trains stop 110–120 km short, at Aluva or Angamaly. From there it is about four more hours by bus or taxi, the same climb as from Kochi. Details are on the railway station page.

From Madurai

About 4.5 hours for 160 km, either by private sleeper bus or by state bus with a change at Theni.

From Kodaikanal

There is no direct bus. A taxi goes round via Theni, about 150 km in 4.5–5.5 hours, because the old direct road over Top Station is closed to the public.

Nearest airport and railway station

Airport: Cochin International (COK) near Kochi is the usual one. Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu is the alternative, but farther: the Eravikulam park office, 13 km beyond Munnar, gives about 148 km from Kochi airport and 175 km from Coimbatore.

Railway: there is no line to Munnar today. The Kundala Valley Railway, which carried tea from Munnar to Top Station, was washed away in the 1924 flood and never rebuilt. Aluva (Alwaye) and Angamaly are the nearest stations, 110–120 km away on the Kerala side.

Tips for the road up

The road is the first sight of the trip, and a few habits make it easier.

  • Catch a morning bus — Departures from Ernakulam start around two in the morning and thin out after ten; an afternoon start means arriving in the dark.
  • Ask the driver to stop — Half the road up is viewpoints, and stopping at them is normal practice rather than a favour; say so at the start of the ride.
  • One road, two prices — The bus and the taxi take the same route in roughly the same time. The difference is the price, about twenty times, and a guaranteed seat.

Monsoon and night driving

From June to August landslides can close stretches of the Gap Road, and night driving can be banned in heavy rain. Hill roads are unlit, so plan to arrive before dark in any season. In the wet months, check that the road is open before you leave and keep a spare day. More on the best time to visit.

Once you are there

Buses arrive at the stand in the centre, next to the Main Bazaar. The viewpoints and lakes are spread along separate roads out of town, so most people hire a car or a rickshaw for the day. Options and prices are on getting around Munnar.
