Nearest station: Aluva

There is no railway to Munnar and there never has been. Trains stop at Aluva or Angamaly, 110 to 120 km short, and the rest is road either way.

Why there is no station

Idukki district, where Munnar lies, has no railway station at all, according to Kerala Tourism. There was once a line in these hills, though not a passenger one. The Kundala Valley Railway, a bullock-drawn monorail from 1902 and a 2 ft narrow-gauge line from 1908, carried tea and other goods about 35 km from Munnar and Madupatty to Top Station, where an aerial ropeway lowered it about 5 km to Kottagudi, the "Bottom Station" in Tamil Nadu. The great flood of 1924 destroyed the system, and it was never rebuilt.

From the train to Munnar

  1. Get off at Aluva or Angamaly

Both are on the main line through Kochi. If your train only stops at Ernakulam, the KSRTC buses to Munnar leave from there too.

  2. Take a bus or a taxi up

The state KSRTC buses from Ernakulam take about 4–4.5 hours and cost about ₹130–190; departures run from about 02:00 to 10:20, four or more a day. A taxi from Aluva or Angamaly takes about four hours.

  3. Time it to arrive in daylight

Departures thin out after ten in the morning, and an afternoon start means climbing in the dark on unlit hill roads.

Munnar KSRTC bus stand

The KSRTC bus stand is in the centre of town, by the Moolakadai end of the Main Bazaar, with Mount Carmel church on the hill above it. Buses from Kochi arrive here, and local services leave for Top Station, Mattupetty and Kumily, at about ₹20–60. They are infrequent, so check the time of the last bus back before you set out, not after. For most viewpoints a car or rickshaw for the day is simpler: see getting around Munnar. Monsoon and night roads

From June to August landslides close stretches of the Gap Road, and in heavy rain night driving can be banned. Hill roads are unlit, so plan the road leg from the station to arrive before dark.
