Where to stay in Kochi

← Kochi

For a first visit, stay in Fort Kochi: the Chinese fishing nets, the old churches, the cafes and the galleries are all within walking distance. Choose Ernakulam on the mainland if logistics come first: the metro, the railway stations and the airport road start there, and a ferry crosses to the old town. The hotels in the list below are grouped here by area.

Which area for whom

Kochi is spread over a peninsula, islands and the mainland, so the area decides how much of each day goes on boats and roads.

Fort Kochi: history on foot

Fort Kochi has the nets at sunset, the colonial lanes, St Francis Church, the cafes and the Biennale galleries, and evenings mean cafes and Kathakali theatres. It has the widest range of stays: the Zostel and goSTOPS hostels (the latter in a roughly century-old Dutch building), the family-run Reds Residency homestay, Tissa's Inn and the 1912 Tea Bungalow with their pools, the Old Harbour Hotel in a Dutch-era mansion by the nets, and, at the top, Brunton Boatyard on the site of a 19th-century shipyard and The Malabar House in two 18th-century villas.

Mattancherry: quiet next door

Mattancherry is the spice quarter, with the godowns, the Dutch Palace, the synagogue and the antique rows of Jew Town. There are only a few boutique stays here, intimate and quiet: the Ginger House Museum Hotel on the waterfront near Jew Town, and, towards Fort Kochi, Fragrant Nature with its rooftop pool over the harbour and Bloom Boutique Waterfront. Most shops shut by six and the synagogue is closed on Saturdays, so evenings are calm.

Ernakulam: the practical base

Ernakulam is the business shore of malls, the metro (MG Road and Maharaja's College stations) and the Marine Drive promenade. It is handy for shopping, trains and the airport road, and a ferry crosses to the old town. On the list here: North Seven Hotel, near the Town Hall metro station.

The harbour islands: resorts

Two large resorts sit on islands between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi: the Taj Malabar at the tip of Willingdon Island, looking over the harbour, and the Grand Hyatt on 26 acres of Bolgatty Island. Space, pools and spas, at the cost of a drive or a boat to everything else.

A night on the backwaters

For a night on the water, the kettuvallam houseboats on the list (Spice Coast Cruises and Aqua Jumbo) are based on the Alappuzha–Kumarakom backwaters, about 1–1.5 hours from Kochi, with meals cooked aboard.

Getting between the areas

From Ernakulam to Fort Kochi the Water Metro takes about 20 minutes (7:00 to 20:00) and the state ferry about the same, until around 21:10. Fort Kochi to Mattancherry is about ten minutes by rickshaw or bicycle. From June to September heavy rain can stop the boats, so a Fort Kochi base then means more time on the road. Details on the getting around page.

When to book early

Christmas to New Year. Fort Kochi is at its fullest between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day, and the Cochin Carnival, which opens in mid-December and ends with the burning of the Pappanji at midnight on New Year's Eve (31 December 2026 – 1 January 2027, expected), keeps the pressure on the small peninsula for most of the month. Book about two and a half months ahead. Ernakulam has more rooms and is cheaper, but on New Year's Eve the ferries and bridge roads jam, so for the carnival it is better to sleep in Fort Kochi.

Onam (3–15 September 2027). The pressure falls on transport first, then on rooms; book about a month and a half ahead. If the plan includes day trips, Ernakulam is the better base.

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, held every other winter, fills the homestays and heritage hotels of Fort Kochi.
