Luxury hotels in Kochi
Luxury in Kochi comes in two shapes: small heritage hotels in colonial buildings in Fort Kochi, and large resort hotels on the islands of the harbour. Which one suits you depends less on the stars than on where you want to spend your evenings, because in Kochi the water decides how quickly you get anywhere.

Four areas, four kinds of stay
The hotels in the list above sit in different parts of the harbour. Here is what each part gives you.
Fort Kochi: heritage in the old town
The luxury here is small and historic. Brunton Boatyard stands on the site of a 19th-century shipyard on the harbour front, with 22 rooms and four suites, period teak furniture, a pool and the History restaurant. The Malabar House, a Relais & Châteaux member since 2008, occupies two 18th-century villas facing the Parade Ground, with seventeen rooms and an art collection. The old quarter is walkable: the nets, the churches, the cafés and the Kathakali shows.
Willingdon Island: the classic grand hotel
Taj Malabar Resort & Spa sits at the tip of Willingdon Island, between Ernakulam and Fort Kochi, looking over the harbour where the backwaters meet the sea. It has a Jiva Spa and an infinity pool, offers sunset harbour cruises, and its Rice Boat restaurant is one of the city's best-known dining rooms. The old town and the mainland are a boat or car ride away.
Bolgatty Island: a resort with space
Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty spreads over 26 acres on Bolgatty Island, a short hop from the city: 264 rooms and suites, villas with plunge pools, several restaurants, pools, a backwater boardwalk and a large convention centre. It suits people who want an international brand, room to spread out, or a conference on the doorstep.
The mainland: business and the airport road
Ernakulam and its suburbs have the business hotels, close to the malls, the metro and the road to the airport, about 30 km away, against 37–40 km from Fort Kochi. In Maradu, south of the centre, Le Méridien houses Restaurant Chef Pillai, chef Suresh Pillai's Kerala kitchen. Choose the mainland if logistics come first; the old town is a ferry ride away.
How to choose
Four questions settle most of it.
- Where will you spend the evenings? — Sunset by the nets and dinner in the old town point to Fort Kochi. The last Water Metro boats leave around 20:00 and the state ferry around 21:10, so from the islands or the mainland a late evening in Fort Kochi ends with a taxi.
- Character or facilities? — Heritage hotels in Fort Kochi have fewer rooms, old buildings and a sense of place. The island resorts have more restaurants, bigger pools and more space. All four in the list have a spa or an Ayurveda centre.
- Is there an early flight? — Cochin International at Nedumbassery is an hour to an hour and a half by road from Fort Kochi. For a dawn departure, a night on the mainland side saves sleep.
- Does a room face the water? — Brunton Boatyard and Taj Malabar have harbour-view rooms, and Grand Hyatt sits on the backwaters; the Malabar House faces the Parade Ground instead. If the view matters, ask for it specifically when booking.
A night on the backwaters
Luxury in Kerala can also float. Spice Coast Cruises, from the CGH Earth group that runs Brunton Boatyard, takes a private kettuvallam (traditional rice barge) through the Alleppey–Kumarakom backwaters with full board, anchoring at sunset; the backwaters are about 1–1.5 hours from Kochi.
